The Actor Cast as Kratos in Prime Video’s ‘God of War’ Series Has Been Revealed
Prime Video has finally cast the lead for its long-awaited live-action God of War series. Ryan Hurst, known for roles in Sons of Anarchy and The Walking Dead, will take on the role of Kratos, the Spartan warrior who becomes the God of War.
Hurst previously voiced Thor in God of War: Ragnarök, giving him a unique connection to the franchise before stepping in front of the camera. The series was first ordered by Prime Video in December 2022 and has since undergone significant creative changes.
The original creative team left the project in October 2024 after producers decided to go in a different direction. Ronald D. Moore, the acclaimed creator behind Outlander and Battlestar Galactica, joined shortly after and is now serving as showrunner.
The series has already been given a two-season order, and casting and preproduction are currently ongoing. Frederick E.O. Toye, known for his work on Shogun and The Boys, is set to direct the first two episodes.

The storyline will follow Kratos and his 10-year-old son, Atreus, based on the most recent Norse-era games. According to the show’s logline, the father and son will travel to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye.
Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, the description reads. While Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.
Hurst is a veteran of intense television dramas, having most recently appeared in the Netflix Western series The Abandons. He is also set to star in Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated adaptation of The Odyssey.
The series is being produced by Sony Pictures TV, Amazon MGM Studios, and PlayStation Productions. Executive producers include industry veterans like Moore, Maril Davis, and Cory Barlog, the creative director of the 2018 game.
God of War is based on the popular video game franchise created by David Jaffe and developed by Sony’s Santa Monica Studio. The games follow Kratos’ journey through both Greek and Norse mythologies across nine main titles.
The franchise began in 2005 on PlayStation 2 and has since sold over 66 million copies worldwide. It is considered one of PlayStation’s most successful brands and has won multiple Game of the Year awards.
While a film adaptation was once planned but eventually canceled, this Prime Video series marks the first major live-action adaptation. Filming is reportedly scheduled to begin in Vancouver in March 2026.
Hurst’s upcoming role in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey places him in a massive ensemble cast. The film stars Matt Damon as Odysseus and Tom Holland as his son Telemachus, with a scheduled release for July 17, 2026.
Fans of Hurst also know him for his voice work beyond the God of War games. He recently voiced characters in the animated series Weather Hunters and previously played Lobo in Superman: Man of Tomorrow.
The actor’s physical presence and deep, gravelly voice have made him a fan favorite for tough yet emotional characters. His portrayal of Opie Winston in Sons of Anarchy remains one of his most beloved performances to date.
The God of War show is expected to feature 10 episodes in its first season. It will focus specifically on the 2018 reboot’s narrative, skipping Kratos’ earlier Greek history to focus on his life in Midgard.
With Hurst as Kratos and Ronald D. Moore at the helm, the series looks set to bring a brutal and emotional story to a wider audience. The production aims to maintain the high cinematic standards set by the original games.
