The AI Characters of ‘VisionQuest’ and the Actors Who Bring Them to Life

The AI characters in ‘VisionQuest’ sit at the center of a Disney+ series that premieres on October 14 and runs for eight episodes. After rebooting and slipping into hiding, Vision searches for new meaning by consulting the AI personas embedded in his programming.

Most of those programs now appear as human avatars rather than disembodied voices, which opens the door to live action. That makes the cast list worth sorting out, so here is a guide to who each AI is and which actor plays them.

Who Plays F.R.I.D.A.Y., E.D.I.T.H. and J.A.R.V.I.S.

Orla Brady plays F.R.I.D.A.Y., taking over from Kerry Condon, who voiced the program across several earlier MCU films. The character is the AI system Tony Stark built to replace J.A.R.V.I.S. Brady is the physical manifestation of that voice.

Emily Hampshire portrays E.D.I.T.H., replacing Dawn Michelle King, who previously voiced the AI. E.D.I.T.H. is the augmented reality security system Stark created and later left to Peter Parker. Hampshire is best known as Stevie Budd in ‘Schitt’s Creek’.

James D’Arcy plays a human version of J.A.R.V.I.S., the assistant previously voiced by Paul Bettany. D’Arcy is also returning from ‘Agent Carter’, where he played Edwin Jarvis, the original human prototype for Stark’s AI butler. The casting adds a layer of continuity for viewers who have followed the character from the start.

Dum-E and U Join the Robot Roster

Henry Lewis plays the humanized version of D.U.M.-E., another of Stark’s AI assistants. Lewis is known for ‘The Goes Wrong Show’. His role brings one of the franchise’s simplest machines into a more expressive form.

Jonathan Sayer plays U, the companion robot previously glimpsed in Marvel’s Iron Man stories. Sayer’s credits include ‘Les Faux British’. He is another performer from the Mischief comedy group, like Lewis.

Both machines are described as part of Stark’s collection of robot helpers. Entertainment journalist Daniel Richtman claimed on his Patreon page that the decision to show so many AIs in human form was meant to reduce visual effects costs and shorten post production. That account is a report and not a confirmed studio statement.

Ultron Returns as a Presence Inside Vision’s Mind

James Spader returns as Ultron. Spader has said the AI retained access to human culture, consuming television, history and the internet while also taking up painting. In the first trailer, Ultron appears in full robot form before Vision pushes him to take on a human shape.

Showrunner Terry Matalas explained the return in an interview with SYFY WIRE. Matalas said Vision backed up a copy of Ultron in a digital prison before deactivating him, because Vision felt he “didn’t really want to kill Ultron.” The explanation gives the villain a plausible path back into the story.

Spader suggested his version of the character is in a noticeably different mindset from the one audiences met before. Bettany and Spader presented the trailer together at D23 alongside Kevin Feige. The pairing signals how central the Vision and Ultron relationship is to the series.

Jocasta and the Rest of the Cast Around Vision

T’Nia Miller plays Jocasta. In the comics, Jocasta was created to serve as Ultron’s bride but defied him and joined the Avengers. A promo suggests her backstory will differ here and that she may serve as the true villain of the series.

Bettany returns as White Vision, who holds all of Vision’s original memories but lacks the emotions attached to them. Bettany has noted that Vision has been copying and pasting other AIs into his mind to keep them alive. That detail explains why so many familiar systems share one mind.

Not every key figure in the series is an AI. Ruaridh Mollica plays Thomas Shepherd, a teenager whose body houses the soul of Tommy Maximoff, while Todd Stashwick plays Paladin, a bounty hunter tracking Vision. With Ultron, Jocasta and Stark’s old assistants all crowding Vision’s mind, which of these AI personas do you expect to shape his choices most, and does Orla Brady’s F.R.I.D.A.Y. match the voice Kerry Condon made familiar?
