In recent years, artificial intelligence has made strides in a variety of fields, from healthcare to finance. But could it also have a place in the world of literature? ‘Holding Out Hope’, a sci-fi book written by AI, challenges the idea of what it means for a work to be truly “human-written.” In this article, we will delve into the possibilities of AI in literature and explore the unique features that were used in the making of ‘Holding Out Hope’.

At Fiction Horizon, we have always been fascinated by the potential of artificial intelligence and its capabilities. That’s why we decided to embark on an ambitious project: to create a sci-fi book entirely written by AI.

To bring this project to life, we turned to the cutting-edge language model ChatGPT from OpenAI for the writing aspect. We also enlisted the help of Midjourney and DALL·E 2 for the creation of accompanying images.

Our goal was to see what ideas and capabilities current AI systems have when it comes to storytelling and visual creation. The resulting book, titled ‘Holding Out Hope’, is a testament to the potential of AI in the world of literature. We are excited to share it with the world and see how readers respond to a work that was entirely created by artificial intelligence.

How we made it work?

At the outset of this project, we had a clear vision of what we wanted to achieve: a sci-fi book entirely written by AI. We knew that achieving this goal would require the use of advanced language models and a careful process of guidance and direction.

To get started, we fed ChatGPT with a series of directions and simple ideas, providing it with the necessary information to begin crafting the story. We were amazed by the results: from just a few sentences of instruction, ChatGPT was able to generate a complete and cohesive narrative.

Of course, no AI-written work is perfect on the first try. There were a few sentences that needed to be changed in order to make the story more consistent and polished. However, overall, the process of creating ‘Holding Out Hope’ was remarkably smooth and efficient. The final product is a testament to the capabilities of current AI systems and their potential to revolutionize the world of literature.

While ChatGPT proved to be an excellent tool for writing the story of ‘Holding Out Hope’, the creation of accompanying images presented a greater challenge. While the images generated by Midjourney and DALL·E 2 were often visually appealing, they were not always consistent enough to be used in the book.

One issue we encountered was that it was difficult to generate the same image twice. For example, if we tried to create a character’s face using AI, the resulting image would often be slightly different each time. This posed a problem for the consistency of the book, as we wanted the characters to be easily recognizable to readers.

To overcome this challenge, we decided to focus on images of characters from the back, as it was easier to generate consistent images in this way. However, even with this approach, there were still some issues to be addressed, such as differences in hairstyle and height. In the end, we made the decision to include these images in the book, acknowledging that in the apocalyptic world depicted in the story, some of those details might change. While not perfect in every detail, we believe that the images in ‘Holding Out Hope’ effectively complement the story and enhance the reader’s experience.

While there is still much to be explored and improved upon in the use of AI for writing books, we are excited to have showcased the potential of these tools with our latest sci-fi release. With the right guidance, AI is even now capable of creating well-developed characters, immersive worlds, and engaging plots, which we haven’t focused on so much this time.
