The ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Pairing Fans Have Been Speculating About Just Got a Reality Check
With more than 30 named characters converging across three franchises, the most interesting question about Marvel’s next crossover isn’t who shows up but who actually gets to share scenes.
Promotional art has been teasing unexpected combinations for months, pairing Ant-Man with Invisible Woman, Shang-Chi with Cyclops, and notably Gambit with Yelena Belova. The ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Gambit and Yelena dynamic has become one of the more discussed subplots before anyone has seen a frame of it.
That pairing wasn’t an accident of marketing. A store display photographed earlier this month placed Channing Tatum’s Gambit alongside Florence Pugh’s Yelena, Anthony Mackie’s Captain America, and Pedro Pascal’s Reed Richards, matching promotional art that surfaced months ago.
Speculation ran in a specific direction. Rumors circulating in late September claimed Gambit would flirt heavily with Yelena, prompting a wave of fan debate about whether the film was setting up a romance.
Cosmic Circus scooper Alex Perez addressed the rumor directly during a Patreon and Discord Q&A, offering a more measured read on what the two characters actually get up to. His assessment was straightforward. Perez said Gambit and Yelena will be in a number of scenes together, but that their interactions will probably be sarcastic banter rather than flirting.
He also shut down an adjacent question. Asked whether Mystique would be used for quick cameos as other X-Men, Perez indicated it appears to be just Yelena, and that characters like Storm or Jean Grey are unlikely in this particular film barring reused flashback footage.

The rumor mill has been busy around Yelena specifically. Earlier reports from scooper MTTSH claimed Mystique and Pugh’s character would share hot scenes together, a description widely flagged as potential exaggeration given that Mystique reportedly transforms into Yelena at some point.
In the comics, Yelena is typically depicted as asexual, with co-creator Devin Grayson noting the character was written to lack interest in traditional romantic paths. That makes a banter-driven dynamic feel considerably more in keeping with the source material.
Whatever happens on screen, the off-screen rapport appears real. During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Pugh was asked which co-star she enjoyed working with most across her Marvel appearances and ‘Dune: Part Three’.

Her answer was immediate. Pugh named Channing Tatum on the ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ set, without hesitation. Tatum’s own enthusiasm has been evident. After years of false starts on a solo Gambit film, he finally debuted as the character in 2024’s ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’, and has described joining the Avengers as a dream come true.
The scale here is enormous. Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo in their first MCU project since ‘Avengers: Endgame’, the film unites the New Avengers, the Fantastic Four and the X-Men against Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom.
Pugh leads the New Avengers contingent alongside Sebastian Stan, Wyatt Russell, David Harbour, Hannah John-Kamen and Lewis Pullman. The X-Men roster includes Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, Rebecca Romijn, Alan Cumming, Kelsey Grammer and Tatum.

The film reportedly carries a $400 million budget, and other rumors have suggested Yelena and Captain America will share the “Avengers, assemble” line. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ opens December 18, 2026, with ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ following in December 2027. Whether the Gambit and Yelena pairing becomes a highlight or a footnote is one of the smaller mysteries heading in.
