‘The Batman’ Writer Is Trying to Reach Out to Sam Raimi About ‘Spider-Man 4’
The original Spider-Man trilogy, directed by Sam Raimi, remains one of the most influential superhero series of all time.
The first film premiered back in 2002 and it was a major hit, praised for Raimi’s direction, the story, the performances, the visual effects, and the action sequences.
The film set a record by reaching $100 million in its opening weekend and went on to earn $826 million worldwide against a $139 million budget.
At the time, it was the third-highest-grossing film of 2002 and the highest-grossing superhero movie ever. It also received Academy Award nominations for Best Sound and Best Visual Effects. The trilogy was followed by Spider-Man 2 in 2004 and Spider-Man 3 in 2007. Years later, Tobey Maguire and Willem Dafoe reprised their roles in Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), connecting Raimi’s trilogy to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Development on Spider-Man 4 began in 2007, with Raimi set to return as director and Maguire and Kirsten Dunst expected to reprise their roles. At one point, Sony considered shooting a fourth and fifth film back-to-back.
Raimi said he wanted the fourth movie to be the best of the series and to end on a high note, especially after expressing dissatisfaction with Spider-Man 3. Several writers were attached over the years, including James Vanderbilt, David Lindsay-Abaire, and Gary Ross. Scripts for potential fifth and sixth films were also discussed. A Venom spin-off was planned during this period but didn’t happen; a different Venom film was later released in 2018.
Now, Mattson Tomlin, known for co-writing The Batman with Matt Reeves, has revealed that he’s trying to contact Raimi about writing Spider-Man 4. In a post on social media, Tomlin explained his vision for the film. “Honestly right now my main interest in this respect would be to write a Spider-Man 4 where Tobey’s Spider-Man is juggling being a husband and a father. Spider-Man as a father is where I gravitate towards given the last 8 films,” he said.
Tomlin also engaged with fans online, confirming he is trying to contact Raimi.

This shows that he is actively trying to involve Raimi in the project. Raimi himself commented in 2022 that his love for the characters remains strong but that there would be “a lot of questions that would have to be answered” if he were to return.
