The 10 Best Horror Movies To Watch With Your Boyfriend

Share:

Some couples enjoy spending their time cuddled up on the couch under a blanket, watching romantic movies, and being all lovey-dovey. Some couples, however, love being thrilled, excited, or even scared when watching a movie together. Now, watching a horror flick alone is one thing, but watching it with your boyfriend/girlfriend gives you a whole new experience.

I’m a huge horror guy, so I’ve browsed through my memory lane to pile up a list of the ten best horror movies to watch with your boyfriend, be it for date night or for having ulterior motives like some of the main characters of these movies… Keep reading to see what I mean.

Honorable mentions: For scaredy cats & childhood trauma

I have a couple of films that haven’t quite made the cute into the top ten, but I just couldn’t bear not having them on the list, so I’ll just mention them really quickly and explain why they’re there.

If you’re not a huge fan of horror films, but your boyfriend/girlfriend is, so you want to give it a go, how about starting with something light – like horror comedies? The zombie comedy with Simon Pegg, ‘Shaun of the Living Dead’ pops to mind as one of the best in the genre.

If vampires are more of your thing, you have to watch ‘What We Do in the Shadows’ with Taika Waititi. The humor is bloody brilliant, and yes, there’s a lot of blood, so it kind of makes it a horror film, but you’ll get more laughs than chills, for sure. Waititi also produced a TV show of the same name that’s arguably even better than the film, but that’s a story for another day.

Now, if you want to go for a classic that has enough scares but also includes a lot of couples, hormones, and all those things you’d want with your boyfriend, then the original ‘Friday the 13th’ is the way to go. Some of the scenes are actually super funny for today’s standards, but it only adds to the experience. Cuddle up and enjoy – just don’t get stabbed in the neck with an arrow.

And lastly, if you and your guy/girl were Harry Potter fans when you were kids – I was, and am to this day – then choose ‘The Woman in Black’ for your next movie night. It stars Harry Potter himself – Daniel Radcliffe – in a film completely different from the magic we all grew to know and love.

I went ‘Oh, no, Harry, Avada Kedavra that b**ch!’ half of the film. Jokes aside, it’s an awesome movie – the childhood trauma it leaves behind is just an add-on. Finally, for our top ten!

10. ‘Paranormal Activity’ (2007)

What it’s about: A couple moves into a new home in the suburbs, but things take a sour turn rather quickly when they realize the house might be haunted by a malevolent demon. They set up cameras all over the house to try and catch a glimpse of what’s going on – but what they capture is much, much worse than they had hoped for.

Why you should watch it: This is the perfect starter-pack couples horror film. Firstly, it revolves around a couple starting a new life together – which is what you and your partner strive to do in the future, right? There’s enough scares for you to get as close to each other as possible, and as for the ending… Let’s just say your man will try not to annoy you as much as possible.

9. ‘Scream’ (1996)

What it’s about: A masked killer terrorizes the town of Woodsboro with a knife, calling his victims on the phone before killing them in cold blood. The killed set his sights on a teenage girl whose mother was murdered a year before and her friends, using scary movie references as a part of a game that eventually leads to bloody murder.

Why you should watch it: I’ve already mentioned a couple of horror comedies on this list, and while ‘Scream’ doesn’t call itself that – it is the best in the genre, no doubt. It’s a movie that mocks all the slasher horror cliches but then uses all those cliches to perfection, packing it into a brilliant, entertaining, shocking, and, at moments, terrifying film.

The best part about watching it as a couple, though, is trying to figure out the mystery with your partner. Me and my girlfriend got into quite a heated discussion about our suspects – but oh, we were both wrong in the end!

8. ‘Escape Room’ (2019)

What it’s about: Six total strangers receive black boxes containing tickets to an escape room game and a chance to win a lot of cash. When they arrive, however, they realize the escape rooms are far too real – and far too deadly – for their comfort. They literally have to escape if they want to live… Will they do it?

Why you should watch it: Escape rooms have become quite a popular date night entertainment nowadays, be it with your partner, your friends, or both. If you and your boyfriend decide to try out your local escape room, watching this film before date night will definitely add some extra flair and scare to your date.

Not only that, but the film is super entertaining as well, so it’s basically an escape room-themed date before the actual escape room date!

7. ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’ (1984)

What it’s about: Freddy Krueger – a dead serial killer – isn’t stopped with death. He attacks you in your dreams, and if you die in the dream, you die in real life. Nancy Thompson and her friends try to uncover the truth that led to these attacks, hidden by her parents so many years ago…

Why you should watch it: Like ‘Friday the 13th’ or ‘Scream,’ ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’ is a classic that got a ton of sequels and remakes – but the original remains the best there is in the franchise. Seeing that Freddy attacks one’s dreams, it’ll be a perfect excuse for you to have your boyfriend cuddle with you extra tightly than night. You know, to keep you safe from Freddy.

6. ‘Jaws’ (1975)

What it’s about: Cape Cod is a local community that thrives due to its amazing beachside front. However, the idyllic atmosphere is shattered when a huge killer, a great white shark, starts terrorizing the people, hunting them down as prey as soon as they enter the water. Now, it’s up to the local sheriff, an old sailor, and a marine biologist to defend the people from the creature.

Why you should watch it: So, you’re planning a summer vacation with your better half. How about a seaside paradise? Sure! Let’s watch this masterpiece first to make the experience so much better! Granted, the visuals are subpar for today’s standards, but come on – ‘Jaws’ is a classic for a reason and a must-watch for every couple going seaside together.

5. ‘Rosemary’s Baby’ (1968)

What it’s about: A woman and her husband are trying for a baby for a while but can’t seem to get pregnant. They move into an old but beautiful apartment building, but the woman soon realizes the neighbors are kind of… odd. Or maybe they aren’t? Suddenly, she mysteriously gets pregnant… but she is certain that the child is not a human offspring…

Why you should watch it: ‘Honey, let’s have a baby’ are probably the scariest words I could ever hear. Seriously, I really think I’m not a parent material – I just don’t like the droopy messes and the smelly diapers. No, sir. If you’re like me, but your partner is really keen on kids… well, perhaps this movie might change their mind.

I’m joking, of course (but I kind of am not), but ‘Rosemary’s Baby’ is one of the best horror flicks ever created. Whether you and your partner want kids or not – this movie is a perfect watch in both cases!

4. ‘The Visit’ (2015)

What it’s about: A single mom plans a vacation with her boyfriend, so she decides to leave the kids at their grandparents’ house. She was estranged from them for quite a while and found this as an opportunity to at least let her kids connect with their grandparents.

While there, Becca – one of the kids – decides to film a documentary about them, to show to her mother and let her reconnect with them later, too. She and her little brother had no idea what they were getting into…

Why you should watch it: Okay, I have a story to tell – one that I find hilarious to this day, but my now-fiance would likely disagree. We were getting serious, and there was this big family reunion at my grandma’s place, and I asked my then-girlfriend to come with me to meet her and my grandpa. She was so happy to agree and said she couldn’t wait.

I was like – ‘That’s awesome! You know what? I found this cool movie, literally about a visit to a grandparents’ house. Maybe we should watch it just to get into the vibes?’ She never forgave me. I highly recommend doing this with your partner as a joke before visiting your grandparents – when you watch the film, you’ll know why.

3. ‘Sinister’ (2012)

What it’s about: A true crime writer who’s known as controversial for writing about real-life murder victims is researching a new subject. He finds some home movie tapes in his new house, only to realize how deeply connected they are to a series of unexplained, unsolved murders dating back decades… Is it the work of an elusive serial killer or something even darker?

Why you should watch it: According to a 2020 study conducted by Broadband Choices, ‘Sinister’ came out as the scariest horror movie of all time. Is there really a better horror movie to watch with your partner than the scariest horror movie ever?

And, oh, trust me, it’s scary. I’m not sure if it’s the scariest ever, but it’s just an awesome movie altogether. Perhaps it won’t be as traumatizing to you if you watch it as a couple.

2. ‘The Blair Witch Project’ (1999)

What it’s about: A group of film students embark on a hike through the woods to film a documentary about the Blair Witch, a local legend of the Maryland forest. The only thing that was found after their disappearance was the footage you’re about to watch.

Why you should watch it: There are a couple of reasons why you should watch ‘The Blair Witch Project’ with your partner. Firstly, it’s one of the first – or certainly the most popular – found-footage horror films ever. You never actually see any murders or anything – which makes the film even scarier. And secondly, wouldn’t it be great to watch it right before going on a hiking date or a camping trip? The thing is, the scares don’t lie in what you see in the film – but in what you don’t.

1. ‘The Conjuring’ (2013)

What it’s about: Ed and Lorraine Warren are paranormal investigators called to an old farmhouse that might be very – very haunted. The family’s mother appears to be the target of the evil spirit’s wrath – and the Warrens will soon uncover why.

Why you should watch it: Lastly, ‘The Conjuring’ quickly became a staple of the horror movie industry – and for a good reason. It spurned out an entire universe – much like the MCU, where every movie is loosely connected, but in a horror-ish hellscape.

In this particular movie, there are a ton of scares that will leave you gasping for air, but there are also beautiful, tender moments between the family members – and especially between Ed and Lorraine – the paranormal investigators who came to the family’s aid. Also, being based on a true story sure helps to make matters even scarier!
