‘The Book of Boba Fett’ Finale: What’s Next for Disney+?

Disney+ hit the ground running when it was launched in 2019. With the launch, Disney premiered The Mandalorian, which follows the adventures of a Mandalorian across the galaxy. Needless to say, it was hit. During the second season, Disney revealed that a spinoff of The Mandalorian titled The Book of Boba Fett would premier in December 2021.
The Book of Boba Fett just concluded its season with episode seven being released today February 9th, 2022. The series follows Boba Fett portrayed by Temuera Morrison and Fennec Shand portrayed by Ming-Na Wen as they attempt to make a name for themselves in the galaxy’s underworld by taking over a territory once controlled by Jabba the Hutt.
Star Wars isn’t what it was three decades ago. In fact, it was almost dead up until The Mandalorian. The Mandalorian was a smash hit. The second season was also as big as the first. The Book of Boba Fett received mixed reviews from critics but hardcore and mild fans of the Star Wars universe were all over it. It’s safe to say that Disney+ revived Star Wars. It stands to capitalism that they would want to capitalize on this. After these two shows, what’s next for Disney+ shows set in the Star Wars universe?
The Mandalorian & The Book of Boba Fett
Considering how much of a hit The Mandalorian was, season 3 was gonna happen. If Disney+ sticks to the previous timeline, The Mandalorian will be back for season 3 later in the year. Next, The Book of Boba Fett, even though it hasn’t been renewed for season 2 yet, it might be back for a second season in early 2023.
Obi-Wan Kenobi
Disney+ already has another Star Wars show ready. Obi-Wan Kenobi is the next show after The Book of Boba Fett. The show starts ten years after the events of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. In this limited series, Obi-Wan will be watching over Luke Skywalker in Tatooine. The series will contain six episodes and will premier on May 25 this year.
Andor
After Obi-Wan Kenobi, Disney+ is planning on introducing another show. The show is titled Andor. Andor will follow Rebel spy Cassian Andor, five years before the events of Rogue One (2016) during the formative years of the Rebellion. Filming has already begun in London with the show expected to premiere mid-to-late 2022. It will consist of 12 episodes. Season 2 of the show is already in development.
Ahsoka
The next show is Ahsoka. It will be developed by Jon Favreau and Filoni and thus will exist alongside The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and Rangers of the New Republic. The show will begin filming soon.
The Acolyte
Next is The Acolyte. It is described as a female-centric live-action Star Wars series. It will be written by Russian Doll co-creator Leslye Headland who will also serve as showrunner. Disney revealed that it will take place during the late High Republic era. Filming is expected to begin in mid-2022 and will consist of 10 episodes.
Lando
Next is Lando. Details are not out yet but it will be a limited series focusing on the titular character. The story will be helmed by Dear White People’s Justin Simien.
Rangers of the New Republic
Developed by Favreau and Filoni, Rangers of the New Republic will also play in the same universe as The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and Ahsoka. It is the only show considered to not be active development. The scripts aren’t yet written and is waiting to see how it will figure into the next episodes of The Mandalorian.
Disney+ doesn’t seem to be stopping anytime soon with Star Wars. Why would they when it forms a huge part of their viewership numbers?
