The fourth season of The Boys premiered on June 13, 2024, and is still ongoing as of the time of writing, with several episodes left before the season ends. The situation in the season is as heated as the online debates about the political messages of the current season, and while we are going to talk about the show in this report as well, we are actually going to take a break from all that politics and discuss a rather peculiar issue we’ve noticed, which is related to one of the series’ most important characters – Ryan Butcher.

Namely, as things stand, many fans of the series have only just noticed that the Ryan they’ve seen late in Season 1 is not the same Ryan we have been seeing since Season 2 of the series. This caused quite a ruckus online, as many fans were certain that Cameron Crovetti, who is portraying Ryan now, had always been playing the role, but it turns out that it was not and that we might have a case of the Mandela effect on our hands!

Ryan Butcher, as a character, debuted in the episode “You Found Me,” which was the eighth and final episode of Season 1 of The Boys. In that episode, Ryan appeared in a cameo capacity – more or less – and he finally got a bigger role starting with Season 2. Cameron Crovetti appeared as Ryan in Season 2 and has been portraying the character ever since, becoming a well-known face in the series. This is why many fans believed that Crovetti had been playing Ryan from the very beginning but were shocked when they noticed that the Ryan from Season 1 is not the same as the one appearing since Season 2.

And there is a good reason for that, really, as the character of Ryan had, indeed, been recast between Seasons 1 and 2. He was initially played by Parker Corno, who was then replaced with Crovetti starting with Season 2. No reason for the recast was ever given, but it could be that Crovetti’s social media popularity, which was a bit better than Corno’s at the time, played a role there. Crovetti also publically positioned himself as a big The Boys fan on social media and expressed his wish to appear in the series, which was ultimately granted.

The most interesting thing in this story is that the fans have only just noticed something that has been a fact for years. Sure, many years have passed since Season 1 of The Boys, so – naturally – many fans forgot about Corno’s appearance, but their shock is still a bit surprising.
