‘The Boys’ Star Jensen Ackles Spotted Filming Mysterious New Project, and Fans Think They’ve Cracked the Case

Jensen Ackles has spent years building a reputation as one of genre television’s most reliable leading men, first through his long run on ‘Supernatural’ and more recently through his scene-stealing turn on ‘The Boys.’ That track record means any sighting of him on a new set tends to generate immediate curiosity, even before official details emerge.

That’s exactly what happened this week when the actor was spotted filming what’s being described as a “serial killer drama” in an unnamed location. The nature of the project, combined with Ackles’ history of headlining crime-focused series, quickly set off speculation among fans eager to connect the dots.

According to reports, Ackles has been seen filming in Toronto for a new Prime Video series widely believed to be ‘Rules of Prey,’ an adaptation of John Sandford’s long-running crime novel franchise. If the speculation holds up, Ackles would be stepping into the role of Lucas Davenport, the sharp, unconventional Minneapolis police detective at the center of Sandford’s bestselling book series.

Sandford’s Prey novels have built a massive following since ‘Rules of Prey’ was first published in 1989, following Davenport as he navigates politically sensitive and often gruesome cases for what eventually becomes the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. The character has appeared in dozens of bestselling installments over the decades, giving any television adaptation a deep well of material to draw from.

According to production reporting, the new series is filming under the working title “B.C.A.” in Toronto, with shooting dates running from September 14 through December 16. Bruce Terris has been named as the project’s showrunner, taking on the role of primary creative architect for the adaptation.

Notably, Prime Video hasn’t officially confirmed Ackles’ casting as of this writing, meaning the connection remains speculative for now, built largely on set sightings and fan sleuthing rather than an official studio announcement. Still, the timing and description of the project have been enough to convince much of the fandom that this is indeed his next major role.

If the casting is confirmed, this wouldn’t be Ackles’ first collaboration with the streamer. He previously led ‘Countdown,’ a Prime Video action thriller about an LAPD detective drawn into a citywide conspiracy, which debuted in June 2025 through his and his wife Danneel Ackles’ production company, Chaos Machine, under a first-look deal with Amazon MGM Studios.

That series, unfortunately, struggled critically, holding a rough 31 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes despite performing well in the streaming charts. ‘Countdown’ was ultimately canceled after a single season, closing the book on Ackles’ first major leading vehicle for the platform.

Landing the role of Lucas Davenport, assuming the reports hold up, would give Ackles the opportunity to headline a series built on genuinely well-established source material rather than an original concept. With Sandford’s Prey novels boasting a passionate, built-in readership, the adaptation arrives with a level of brand recognition ‘Countdown’ never had going in.

For now, fans will have to wait for official confirmation from Prime Video before the casting becomes anything more than an educated guess. Given how quickly the sighting spread online, though, it seems unlikely the streamer will stay quiet on the matter for long.
