‘The Chi’ Season 8 Episode 6 Sets Streaming Date As Final Season Tension Reaches A Boiling Point
Chicago’s South Side has carried ‘The Chi’ through eight seasons of triumph, grief, and hard won redemption, and the show’s farewell run is proving just as unflinching as its earliest days. Season 8 premiered on May 22, 2026, with an episode titled “Coldest Winter Ever,” marking the start of the final chapter for Lena Waithe’s coming of age drama. The season was confirmed as the show’s last after Waithe announced the decision on October 1, 2025.
The stakes have only intensified as the season has unfolded, with two rival factions clawing for control of the neighborhood and longtime characters forced into impossible choices. The season finds Victor, Shaad, Emmett, Kiesha, and Darnell all confronting the cost of their pasts, while Nuck and Reg balance loyalty against family. That tension sets up exactly why fans are now circling their calendars for the next chapter.
According to the streaming schedule confirmed by Paramount+, episode 6 of the farewell season is set to arrive soon. The series releases one new episode every Friday until its finale in July, with episodes dropping at the show’s usual rollout time of 3 a.m. Eastern on streaming, putting episode 6 on Paramount+ on Friday, June 26. Cable viewers watching through Showtime will see the episode two days later, on Sunday, June 28, following the platform’s traditional broadcast delay.
Streaming access for the final season remains tied to a specific subscription tier. ‘The Chi’ is only available to Paramount+ Premium subscribers, since that is the only plan offering Showtime content, while Essential plan subscribers are locked out entirely. The Premium tier runs $13.99 per month and unlocks the full Showtime library alongside the rest of Paramount+’s catalog. In total, Season 8 will run ten episodes before the series closes out for good.
For Waithe, ending the show on her own terms was never up for debate. Speaking about why she chose to wrap the series now rather than let it fade out, the creator told WBEZ Chicago that she didn’t want the show to “go out with a whimper,” adding that “if the goodbye doesn’t hurt, then you’re not doing it right.”
That sentiment echoes the larger goodbye Waithe described when the final season was first announced. In a statement to Deadline, she explained that creating ‘The Chi’ was never just about making a television show, but about “owning our narratives and telling our stories with truth, care, nuance and complexity.” She called helming the longest running Black drama on television “a huge honor” and said she remains grateful to the writers, actors, and crew who built the world alongside her.
With the South Side’s two warring factions on a collision course and the season’s body count likely far from finished, episode 6 looks poised to push several fan favorites past the point of no return. As the countdown to June 26 continues, which South Side relationship do you think won’t survive ‘The Chi’s final stretch of episodes?
