‘The Cycle’ Just Became the Horror Sleeper Hit Everyone Is Talking About This Halloween

Every spooky season produces at least one genre surprise, and this year that honor appears to belong to ‘The Cycle’. Jordan Downey’s slow-burn horror thriller arrived on Shudder on October 23 and has been steadily building a reputation as one of the most acclaimed scary movies of the year.

The buzz started long before its streaming debut. The first reviews landed out of Fantastic Fest in Austin on September 19, and the film’s festival run initially earned it a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes before more critics weighed in.

Now the numbers have settled in, and they’re still remarkable. ‘The Cycle’ currently sits at a Fresh 95% on the Tomatometer from 38 reviews, an impressive showing for a modestly scaled genre release.

‘Clayface’ Matches ‘Obsession’ for the Best Audience Score of Any Major Horror Movie This Year

That puts it in rarefied company among this year’s horror offerings. Screen Rant noted that nothing else in the genre currently matches or beats its score, with ‘Obsession’ at 93%, ‘Send Help’ at 92% and ’28 Years Later: The Bone Temple’ at 91%, though those titles have significantly more reviews behind them.

Audiences are a little more divided, though. The film holds a 65% Popcornmeter score from more than 50 ratings, suggesting its deliberate pacing isn’t landing for everyone. The story follows a daughter forced to confront her family’s history when the body of her father, missing for 36 years, turns up at a horrific crime scene. Deborah Ann Woll stars as Meg, alongside Jeffrey Donovan as Marks, Will Hochman as Ian, and Don Keith Opper as Frank.

What begins as a moody police procedural eventually transforms into something far stranger. Critics have praised the way the film blends crime-thriller tropes with creature-feature horror, saving its biggest reveal for the back half.

Much of the acclaim centers on the film’s old-school craftsmanship. Writing for RogerEbert.com, Brian Tallerico acknowledged that the genre-flipping premise has been done before, but said the film “feels fresh due to the commitment of its creators.”

He also singled out Nick Soole’s score as one of the best genre soundtracks of the year and praised the moody visuals from cinematographer Kevin Stewart. Deep Focus Review was equally impressed by special effects supervisor Patrick Magee’s puppet and gore work, calling it genuinely disturbing.

Not every critic was won over, however. The Guardian’s Leslie Felperin gave it 2 out of 5 stars, arguing that the drama works well enough but the full-on creature-feature finale disappoints.

The film also picked up a very high-profile endorsement. Stephen King praised ‘The Cycle’ as special and likened it to a gruesome mash-up of ‘The Thing’ and ‘The Silence of the Lambs’, thanks to its blend of procedural storytelling and body horror.

That kind of seal of approval has clearly helped its momentum. Beyond its success on Shudder, the movie also ranked No. 3 on AMC+ in the United States shortly after release. Part of what makes the reception so striking is Downey’s filmography. He previously directed ‘The Head Hunter’ in 2018, but he’s also the filmmaker behind ‘ThanksKilling’, a deliberately silly comedy about a talking killer turkey.

Downey co-wrote ‘The Cycle’ with Stewart and also edited the film himself, which was shot in Oregon’s lush Pacific Northwest forests. The Austin Chronicle praised him as a horror director of rare compassion, noting how the film gives real emotional weight to Meg’s painful search for the truth.

With a 111-minute runtime and a patient build, it’s clearly not a quick jump-scare fix. But for horror fans craving tactile, handmade monster mayhem just in time for Halloween, ‘The Cycle’ is shaping up to be essential viewing.
