‘The Diplomat’ Recap Covers Every Major Turn Before the New Season Begins

Netflix’s political thriller is back on screens today, which makes this ‘The Diplomat’ recap a useful refresher. The fourth season premieres on Netflix on October 15, and it follows three seasons built around politics, nuclear weapons, diplomatic crises and a marriage that rarely feels stable. A lot has changed for the central characters since the pilot.

The story centers on Kate Wyler, played by Keri Russell, a career diplomat who is unexpectedly appointed US ambassador to the UK. Her husband Hal, played by Rufus Sewell, is a diplomat in his own right and rarely stays out of her business. Here is how the first three seasons led to the point where viewers now pick the story back up.

What Happened in ‘The Diplomat’ Season One

Kate is preparing to become ambassador to Afghanistan when an attack on the British aircraft carrier HMS Courageous kills 43 sailors. President William Rayburn, played by Michael McKean, sends her to London instead. The assignment is not what it seems.

Vice President Grace Penn is expected to leave office because of a scandal involving her husband, and Kate is quietly being assessed as a possible replacement. Hal complicates matters because he struggles to remain in the background while her career takes centre stage. Their marriage is already close to ending when they arrive in London.

‘The Diplomat’ Season 4 Recap and Ending Explained: Why Kate Wyler Resigns

Much of the season is devoted to finding out who attacked the ship. British Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge initially suspects Iran, but Kate helps prevent an immediate military response as evidence points to a Russian mercenary named Roman Lenkov. In Paris she learns Britain plans to kill Lenkov, and she begins to suspect Trowbridge himself was behind the attack.

The finale ends on a bombing. A bomb planted in the car of Conservative MP Merritt Grove explodes, and Stuart Hayford and his aide Ronnie are caught in the blast. The season closes before anyone learns whether they survived.

How ‘The Diplomat’ Season Two Ended

Season two opens right after the explosion. Hal and Stuart survive with injuries, although Ronnie does not. The investigation then pushes Kate toward an answer she did not expect.

Kate’s inquiry leads to Margaret Roylin, Trowbridge’s former political adviser, who helped hire Lenkov’s group, though Trowbridge himself did not order the attack. The plan actually came from Grace Penn, who believed the attack was necessary to protect US national security interests. That discovery turns the show’s central mystery into a problem inside the American government.

Kate finally admits she wants the vice presidency, and Hal decides Washington has to be told. He calls President Rayburn directly, and Rayburn dies shortly after learning the truth, which makes Grace the president. According to Netflix’s Tudum, Hal’s actions accidentally hasten the death of Rayburn.

The cliffhanger landed hard with the cast as well. Allison Janney has said she threw the season two finale script across the room when she read the ending.

The Season Three Finale and the Missing Poseidon Weapon

Season three begins with Grace sworn in, and she draws the Wylers closer instead of pushing them away. In a major reversal, Hal becomes vice president while Kate stays in London as their marriage continues to fall apart. Kate begins a relationship with intelligence operative Callum Ellis, played by Aidan Turner.

The central crisis arrives with a Russian submarine. A Russian submarine carrying a Poseidon torpedo is discovered off the English coast, and when the weapon later disappears, Kate realizes Grace and Hal may have taken it. Kate confronts Hal, who tells her to tell no one, then immediately informs Grace that Kate knows.

The ending was designed to be quieter than the previous two. Showrunner Debora Cahn told The Hollywood Reporter she was excited to have a more existentially hanging cliff. She also told Netflix’s Tudum that the writers talk about the third season as the split.

Cahn said she tried a softer ending but got a little bored and chose the more dramatic twist. One reviewer at Shifter Magazine felt the season had fewer twists than the second year but still built into the strongest season yet.

What to Expect From ‘The Diplomat’ Season Four

Netflix says the new season begins with a catastrophic event that threatens the fragile peace between the US and UK, while Grace and Hal’s attempt to steal Russia’s most powerful weapon risks pushing the US toward war. That setup places Kate in a position she has not faced before. She knows what her husband and the president have done, and the stakes are now global.

The season also creates an unlikely alliance between Kate and Grace’s husband Todd, played by Bradley Whitford, as they try to stop their spouses. Janney and Whitford have been promoted to series regulars, alongside Nana Mensah as Billie Appiah.

The show has built steady momentum. Netflix announced the early renewal in May 2025, five months before the third season arrived, and Janney won an Emmy for playing Grace last month. With Kate and Todd forced into a partnership against their own spouses, who do you think will crack first under the weight of the Poseidon secret once the new season begins?
