‘The East Palace’ has arrived on Netflix, and the dark fantasy series has quickly become one of the platform’s most talked about Korean dramas of the summer. Set in a fictionalized version of Joseon-era Korea, the show follows a ghost slayer and a court lady as they investigate a deadly curse threatening the royal bloodline.

With the eight episode series now streaming, viewers are getting familiar with the actors bringing this haunted palace to life. Here is a closer look at the cast of ‘The East Palace’ and the characters they play.

Nam Joo-hyuk Leads The East Palace Cast As Gu-cheon

Nam Joo-hyuk stars as Gu-cheon, a swordsman capable of crossing between the human world and the spirit realm known as the Realm of Gwi. Gu-cheon gained his powers as a boy after surviving an accident that drowned his mother, and he has spent his life in the countryside encountering spirits, gwi-maes, and ak-gwis. When the king secretly summons him to the palace, Gu-cheon is given two choices, either destroy the spirit haunting the East Palace and lift the curse on the royal bloodline, or never leave its walls alive.

This marks a significant return for the actor. The role is Nam Joo-hyuk’s first acting job since he finished his eighteen month military enlistment on September 19, 2024. Before enlisting, he built his career on shows like ‘Twenty Five Twenty One’, ‘Start-Up’, and ‘The Light in Your Eyes’, and his path to acting was unconventional, since he originally played basketball before injuries pushed him toward modeling and eventually acting.

His time away from the spotlight was not only about military service, as in 2022 he faced bullying allegations that put his career on pause. The response to his casting suggested fans were eager for his comeback. SPOTV News first reported in June 2024 that Nam Joo-hyuk and Roh Yoon-seo had been cast in the project, with Netflix confirming both actors’ involvement by December of that year.

Roh Yoon-seo Steps Into The Role Of Saeng-gang

Opposite Nam Joo-hyuk is Roh Yoon-seo, who plays Saeng-gang, a court lady born with the ability to hear the voices of the dead. She regards this ability as a curse, just as her father did before her, and she is described as quiet and watchful while carrying that burden through the palace’s long buried secrets.

‘The East Palace’ represents new territory for the actress. Roh Yoon-seo first gained wider attention through ‘Our Blues’ before appearing in ‘Crash Course in Romance’, ‘Black Knight’, and ‘The Frog’, and this project marks her first historical drama. The pairing of Nam Joo-hyuk and Roh Yoon-seo is the first time the two actors have worked together on screen, and that dynamic has been a major part of the pre release conversation around the show.

Together, the pair’s characters carry much of the series’ investigative weight. The two leads investigate the origins of the hauntings and uncover secrets hidden within the royal walls of the East Palace while dealing with spirits from the spectral world.

Cho Seung-woo And The Supporting Royal Cast

Cho Seung-woo plays the king, whose given name in the series is Yi Yeon. Cho Seung-woo’s casting marked his first appearance in a series produced specifically for a global streaming platform, a notable milestone for the veteran actor. His character survived the same curse decades earlier as a child, despite being last in the line of succession because his mother was a lowly concubine, and he grew into a king now watching his own sons die under similarly mysterious circumstances.

The supporting royal cast rounds out the palace’s political tensions. Jang Young-nam appears as the Queen Dowager, while Park Su-yeon rounds out the main cast as the Queen Consort. Park Su-yeon’s character carries the burden of losing royal heirs while navigating the palace’s unforgiving politics, and her approach to supernatural threats through more traditional spiritual practices creates a professional rivalry with Gu-cheon.

Additional named roles fill out the palace’s dangerous world of succession politics. Tae In-ho appears as Prince Ik-sang, while Kwak Dong-yeon plays the Crown Prince, placing both characters directly within an increasingly fragile royal line where every surviving prince becomes both politically valuable and personally vulnerable. Other supporting cast members include Hong Seo-jun as Chief Eunuch Kim, Choi Hyuk-joo as Lady Jang, Jo Dan as Prince Yeongan, Choi Beom-ho as a monk, and Min Eung-sik as the Second State Councilor.

The Creative Team Behind The East Palace’s Premiere

The series comes from a production team with a track record in supernatural storytelling. ‘The East Palace’ is directed by Choi Jung-kyu, who previously helmed ‘The Devil Judge’, and written by the duo of Kwon So-ra and Seo Jae-won, who both penned ‘The Guest’ and ‘Bulgasal, Immortal Souls’. The series is produced jointly by Showrunners and Imaginus.

The show premiered as a complete season for viewers to binge immediately. ‘The East Palace’ consists of eight episodes and aired its full run on Netflix starting July 17, 2026, with each episode running approximately sixty minutes and carrying a content rating of 15 and older. It was a fully pre produced series, with filming having wrapped in 2025 ahead of its release.

Early reactions have highlighted the show’s willingness to avoid clear cut heroes and villains. One viewer review noted that the antagonists were plentiful and chaotic, making it difficult to know who to root for, and argued that the show benefits from moving away from typical morally perfect heroes since true innocence feels impossible in a royal setting. That same review compared the overall feel of ‘The East Palace’ to a mix of ‘Stranger Things’, ‘Sweet Home’, and ‘Kingdom’.

With the full season now available to stream, the mix of palace politics and supernatural horror gives the ensemble plenty of room to unravel the mystery of the pond spirit’s curse. How do you think Gu-cheon and Saeng-gang’s uneasy partnership will hold up once the palace’s darkest secrets are fully exposed?
