‘The Families Stone’ Brings the Original Cast Back for a New Christmas Story, Check Out the First Look

“The Family Stone” is getting a sequel nearly 20 years after the original movie became a holiday favorite. Searchlight Pictures has officially announced that the follow-up will be called “The Families Stone,” and the project is bringing back most of the original cast. Rachel McAdams, Sarah Jessica Parker, Claire Danes, Dermot Mulroney, Craig T. Nelson, Luke Wilson and several other familiar faces are returning, giving the new movie a strong connection to the 2005 film.

The sequel also comes with a more emotional story than a typical holiday follow-up. The original movie centered on the Stone family during Christmas and became known for mixing family arguments, romance, comedy and heavier emotional moments. Diane Keaton played Sybil Stone, the family matriarch, and her death in October 2025 has given the sequel an added sense of importance. Instead of ignoring her absence, the new story will make it part of the family’s next chapter.

According to Searchlight Pictures’ official synopsis, “The Families Stone” takes place 20 years after the death of the family’s mother. The Stone family comes together for another Christmas, but this time their father, Kelly Stone, has an unexpected announcement. He has fallen in love again and decides to introduce his new partner to the family. That immediately creates the kind of awkward and emotional situation that fans of the original movie will probably recognize.

The returning cast makes the sequel feel much closer to a reunion than a simple continuation. Dermot Mulroney is back as Everett Stone, while Rachel McAdams returns as Amy Stone. Sarah Jessica Parker is once again Meredith Morton, Claire Danes returns as Julie Morton and Luke Wilson is back as Ben Stone. Craig T. Nelson will also reprise his role as Kelly Stone, with Tyrone Giordano, Elizabeth Reaser and Paul Schneider returning as well. Brian White has also joined the returning group as Patrick Thomas.

Thomas Bezucha is another major piece of the original movie coming back for the sequel. He wrote and directed the 2005 film, and he will once again handle both jobs this time around. That gives the new movie a direct connection to the style and characters of the first film rather than handing the story to an entirely new creative team. Bezucha’s return also makes the project feel like a continuation of something he started almost two decades ago.

Dermot Mulroney previously gave fans an idea of how emotional the new movie could be. After reading Bezucha’s completed script, Mulroney spoke about the material in comments shared by Parade. He said he had trouble fully processing the story because of how much it connected to the loss of Diane Keaton. That reaction could be a sign that the sequel is planning to deal with the family’s grief rather than simply using the original movie’s name to bring audiences back.

The first “The Family Stone” was released in December 2005 and became a solid theatrical success. Made for around $18 million, the movie earned approximately $92.9 million worldwide. It received mixed reviews from critics, but its reputation grew over the years as more viewers discovered it through holiday rewatches. The combination of a large ensemble, family drama and Christmas setting helped turn the movie into a regular part of many people’s seasonal viewing.

Now the challenge for “The Families Stone” will be finding the same balance while moving the characters into a very different stage of their lives. The family is older, their mother is gone and a new relationship is about to change the holiday once again. With most of the original ensemble returning and Bezucha back behind the camera, the sequel has a real chance to capture the familiar feeling of the first movie while telling a story that stands on its own.

Production is reportedly expected to begin in New York this fall. Searchlight has not yet revealed a release date, but the project is clearly moving forward quickly after its official announcement. For fans who have returned to “The Family Stone” every Christmas for years, seeing this family together again could make “The Families Stone” one of the more emotional holiday movie reunions in years.
