Movie theater collectibles have become an event of their own, and few films have embraced the trend quite like ‘Godzilla Minus Zero’. Takashi Yamazaki’s follow-up to the Oscar-winning ‘Godzilla Minus One’ opens in Japan on November 3, the same date the original ‘Godzilla’ debuted in 1954, before arriving in North America through GKIDS on November 6. It’s also billed as the first Japanese production shot for IMAX.

The sequel is set in 1949, 2 years after the events of ‘Minus One’, with Yamazaki returning as director, writer, and visual effects supervisor. Expectations are sky-high after the first film earned more than $116 million worldwide and became a global phenomenon.

Now the film’s most talked-about piece of merchandise is getting its moment. A viral video shared by fan account Mr. Goji shows a theater employee filling the full-body ‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ popcorn bucket at the concession stand, with popcorn being loaded right into the monster’s back.

Seeing it in action highlights just how enormous the collectible really is. Cinemark has confirmed the 3D Godzilla bucket stands 19.5 inches tall, complete with jagged dorsal plates and a massive tail. It looks more like a collectible statue than something meant to hold snacks.

Cinemark’s lineup also includes a Heat Ray Drink Bottle, a sculpted Godzilla head with a blue, heat-ray-shaped bottle rising from its mouth, along with a more traditional popcorn tin. The 3D bucket comes with an XL popcorn served on the side.

The bucket doesn’t come cheap. Prices for the giant 3D Godzilla bucket generally range from about $90 to $100, depending on the retailer. Fandango sold its version for $100, which included a free movie ticket but no popcorn, and it quickly sold out.

Other theaters have seen the same frenzy. One drive-in listed its giant 3D molded bucket at $99.95 before it sold out, while another chain is offering an 85-ounce version standing 1.6 feet tall. For fans who want something more affordable, smaller options include a Godzilla Swimming tin bucket and mystery Godzilla figures.

The bucket first surfaced in Brazil, where distributor SATO described it as an exclusive collectible for the country’s theatrical release and reportedly expects it to be the largest popcorn bucket ever sold there. Since then, posts online have claimed it’s the largest in history, though no official record exists to verify that.

There’s an important caveat, too. Reports note that the famous Galactus bucket still holds considerably more popcorn, meaning Godzilla wins on stature while Galactus keeps the capacity crown. One fan joked that calling it a bucket was stretching the definition of the word.

The merchandise buzz arrives as excitement for the film reaches a fever pitch. ‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ has reportedly earned a near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes score ahead of its official release, suggesting Yamazaki may have pulled off another triumph.

‘Godzilla Minus One’ also won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, setting an intimidating bar for the sequel. With returning stars including Ryunosuke Kamiki and Minami Hamabe, fans are eager to see where the story goes next.

Between an IMAX release, glowing early reviews, and a popcorn bucket that practically demands its own seat, ‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ is shaping up to be one of November’s biggest moviegoing events.

Would you spend around $100 on the giant Godzilla Minus Zero popcorn bucket?
