Fans of the classic 1985 movie The Goonies have reason to be excited. After decades of speculation, a sequel is officially in development.

Potsy Ponciroli, who is writing the script, recently shared an update during a Deadline event at the Venice Film Festival, saying the project is “moving in the right direction.”

He revealed that the first draft of the script was well received and that he is about 95% done with the second draft.

Ponciroli also addressed fans’ concerns about a sequel to such a beloved movie. “I know there’s a lot of ‘do we need a new Goonies,’ but I’m the biggest fan of the original, it’s my favourite movie of all time. I’d never ‘redo’ The Goonies. To me it was a story that never ended so this is the movie I want to see as one of its biggest fans,” he said.

He added that a director has not been announced and it’s unclear when production will begin.

The idea of a sequel has been discussed on and off for many years. Richard Donner, the director of the original, has expressed hope that a follow-up could include as much of the original cast as possible.

Over time, some actors, like Corey Feldman, expressed doubts, while others, like Sean Astin and Ke Huy Quan, showed support for the project. This year reunion with writer Chris Columbus, Feldman said, “All I can say is, get us all together. Everybody is looking good. Sean’s looking good. Josh is looking good. We’re all looking good still, and we’re all alive. Goonies never say die…There’s hope.”

Quan added that a sequel is one of the most asked questions he gets and that he would love for it to happen.

In February, it was officially announced that the sequel is underway. The project is being produced by Steven Spielberg, Kristie Macosko Krieger, Holly Bario, and Chris Columbus for Amblin Entertainment, with Lauren Shuler Donner serving as executive producer.

Personally, I think it’s exciting to see this classic story continue after so many years. The Goonies has a special place in movie history, and it’s promising that the team is approaching the sequel with care and respect for the original.

What do you think about a new Goonies movie? Are you excited to see the old cast return, or do you think some stories are best left untouched? Share your thoughts in the comments.
