The Hasbro Action Figures That Gave Away ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Before Marvel Could
Few things in the Marvel fandom cut through the noise quite like a good toy leak, and the latest batch tied to ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ has delivered in a very big way. The film is easily one of the most anticipated of the year, and after the first footage was shared at CinemaCon, the hype somehow got even higher. Fans have been hungry for any scrap of visual detail on what the film’s characters will actually look like, and now, courtesy of the toy aisle, they have their most complete picture yet.
The new images originated from Idle Hands, who surfaced retailer photos of several figures in the ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ toy line. The first wave spotlights Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, Anthony Mackie’s Captain America, Ebon Moss-Bachrach’s Thing, Joseph Quinn’s Human Torch, and Kelsey Grammer’s Beast, painting a sweeping picture of just how crowded and ambitious this ensemble is shaping up to be.
The centerpiece of the leak, without question, is Doom himself. The Hasbro Titan Series figure offers a full-body look at the character in his classic comic-inspired costume, featuring a green hooded cloak, silver metallic armor with a segmented chest plate and gauntlets, a stern silver mask, and black armored boots. The outfit looks pretty similar to what Doom was sporting in the ‘Fantastic Four: First Steps’ post-credits scene, though audiences only got a sidelong look at him then. Beyond the costume, the toy hints at something even more interesting, as Victor Von Doom will apparently unleash red power blasts, suggesting the MCU is leaning into his sorcerous side as much as his armored intimidation.
Thor’s figure adds another wrinkle worth discussing. While promotional footage has already shown the character sporting a shorter hairstyle reminiscent of his look in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’, the action figure includes a helmet inspired by his classic comic-book design. The leaked toy line also includes a Captain America figure, with Anthony Mackie’s suit appearing to feature longer red gloves and increased white detail around the shoulders and goggles compared to his costume from ‘Captain America: Brave New World’.
None of this comes as a total surprise to those who have been following the directors’ press trail. Speaking at SXSW London alongside ‘Fortnite’ co-creator Donald Mustard on a panel moderated by Variety, Joe and Anthony Russo revealed that Robert Downey Jr.’s upcoming Doctor Doom costume is their favorite out of all five Marvel films they have directed. When pressed for details, Joe kept things deliberately vague, while Anthony told Variety, “It’s representative of the character in a way that the costume and the character really, really fit,” adding that Doom “hits that sweet spot between being very specific and unique to the original story that happens within this film but also delivering on what the most awesome things are about Doom in the comics.”
Marvel is keeping plot details under heavy wraps, though the confirmed cast includes all members of the ‘Fantastic Four’, the entire ‘Thunderbolts’ ensemble, X-Men veterans Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen, and dozens more names still unannounced. The film opens in theaters on December 18, with ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ scheduled to follow on December 17, 2027. Marvel has yet to officially comment on the leaked imagery, but at this point, the toys have done the talking. Now that the full armor is out in the open, how do you feel about Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom look, and does it live up to what you imagined for the MCU’s most dangerous new villain?
