‘The Hunger Games’ Star Mckenna Grace Celebrates Boyfriend Mason Thames Landing a DC Role With an Adorable Throwback

Mason Thames has had a breakout few years. The young actor starred in ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ and in ‘Regretting You’, the Colleen Hoover adaptation released in October 2025, where he played Miller Adams opposite Mckenna Grace’s Clara Morgan.

Their on-screen chemistry carried over into real life. Dating rumors began while the pair was filming in April 2025, and Thames later confirmed the relationship with Instagram photos from a Valentine’s Day trip to Paris, including a shot of the couple in front of the illuminated Eiffel Tower.

Now Thames has a major new role to celebrate. DC Studios co-chairman and co-CEO Peter Safran confirmed in an interview with Collider that Thames will voice Dick Grayson in the upcoming film ‘Dynamic Duo’.

According to Safran, Thames had always wanted to play Dick Grayson. The confirmation turned what had been rumors into official news for DC fans. Grace was quick to celebrate her boyfriend’s news. On her Instagram Story, she shared a CBR headline about DC Studios confirming its Dick Grayson casting, along with an image of Thames next to a comic-book Robin.

She also added a throwback photo of a young Thames smiling in a homemade Robin costume, complete with a red shirt, green sleeves, and the character’s signature “R” logo. Grace captioned the post “perfect,” with laughing emojis and red hearts.

Fans loved the throwback. The childhood photo made it clear that the role is a dream come true for Thames, which matches what Safran said about his long-standing love for the character.

‘Dynamic Duo’ is a puppet-animated feature from DC Studios that focuses on the first 2 Robins, Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, in their early days. Rather than centering on Batman and Robin, the story puts the young heroes in the spotlight.

The film uses a puppetry-based technique with CGI overlays pioneered by Swaybox. Its founders, Arthur Mintz and Theresa Anderson, are directing. Safran has compared the technology’s originality to what Pixar achieved with ‘Toy Story’.

Matthew Aldrich, Michael H. Weber and Scott Neustadter wrote the script. James Gunn, Lynn Harris, Matt Reeves and Safran are among the producers. Logan Kim has been reported as the voice of Jason Todd, though that casting hasn’t been confirmed. Lee Pace and Steve Buscemi have also been rumored to voice characters called Red Hood One and Red Hood Two.

Until DC Studios makes more announcements, fans should treat those names as unconfirmed. Thames is so far the only official voice cast member. The news arrives during a big stretch for both actors. Grace is currently promoting ‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’, in which she plays Maysilee Donner, which opens in theaters on November 20.

The couple has also been supporting each other publicly, and Grace brought Thames as her date to this year’s Oscars. Her Instagram reaction is the latest example of how openly the pair celebrates each other’s wins.

‘Dynamic Duo’ is set to arrive on September 22, 2028. That leaves plenty of time for more casting news and a first look at the film’s unique animation style. For now, Thames’ childhood dream is officially coming true, and Grace made sure everyone knew how proud she is.
