‘The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender’ Movie Pulled from Theatrical Release
The upcoming animated feature, The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender, will no longer hit theaters in October 2026.
Instead, the film will premiere exclusively on Paramount+, which is now set to be the primary streaming home for all animated projects from Avatar Studios, the creative team behind the beloved Nickelodeon series Avatar: The Last Airbender, according to an exclusive report from Deadline.
The shift also applies to the new series, Avatar: Safe Havens, which will stream on Paramount+ according to THR, alongside the feature. Both projects are being produced by Avatar Studios, a division launched in 2021 to expand the world of Avatar and its follow-up series, The Legend of Korra.
The Legend of Aang boasts a star-studded voice cast. In addition to previously announced members Dave Bautista, Eric Nam, Jessica Matten, Dionne Quan, Román Zaragoza, and Steven Yeun, the film now includes Taika Waititi, Geraldine Viswanathan, Dee Bradley Baker, Peta Sergeant, Freida Pinto, and Ke Huy Quan.
Lauren Montgomery is directing the feature, with Steve Ahn and William Mata serving as co-directors. Producers include Latifa Ouaou, Maryann Garger, Bryan Konietzko, and Michael Dante DiMartino, the co-creators of the original animated series. Composer Jeremy Zuckerman, who worked on the original series, will return to score both the movie and the new series.
Jane Wiseman, Head of Originals for Paramount+, said in a statement, “The Avatar Universe has captivated audiences for two decades, and Paramount+ is proud to be the exclusive streaming home for its beloved animated incarnation. The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender and Avatar: Seven Havens represent the next evolution of storytelling from Avatar Studios—bringing together remarkable talent both in front of and behind the camera to deliver the epic adventures and emotional depth fans have come to expect.”
Shifting the film and new series exclusively to streaming reflects Paramount+’s strategy to consolidate animated content from the Avatar Universe on its platform. Fans can expect to explore both classic and new stories from the franchise without needing a trip to the theater.
