‘The Legend of Zelda’ Movie Casts Live-Action Zelda and Link — and Fans Are Mad
The new live-action Legend of Zelda movie has officially found its Princess Zelda and Link. But the two actors chosen are not who many fans expected. On Wednesday, Shigeru Miyamoto, one of Nintendo’s most famous creators, announced the casting on social media.
Miyamoto said, “This is Miyamoto. I am pleased to announce that for the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda, Zelda will be played by Bo Bragason-san, and Link by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth-san. I am very much looking forward to seeing both of them on the big screen.”

Nintendo also posted photos online showing the two actors in costume, giving fans their first look at how the characters will appear in the movie.
Bo Bragason, the actress chosen to play Zelda, is not very well known yet. She has appeared in smaller roles, such as in the shows The Jetty and Renegade Nell. Her most recent work was in King and Conqueror, a series about William of Normandy.
Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, on the other hand, has a bit more experience in bigger projects. He acted in The Haunting of Bly Manor on Netflix, where he played Miles Wingrave. He also appeared in The Sandman, another Netflix show, and voiced Pinocchio in Disney’s live-action movie.
The casting surprised many fans. For a long time, people online believed Hunter Schafer, from the show Euphoria, would play Zelda. This rumor spread after fans shared how much they wanted her in the role.
At one event in 2023, Schafer was even asked about it by Entertainment Tonight. Her response was simple: “I mean, yeah! Obviously. That would be so cool.”
Because of her popularity, some online sources claimed she was being considered for the role, though Nintendo never confirmed that. Now, the rumors can finally be put to rest, as Bragason and Ainsworth are officially set to play the iconic roles.
But, fans were not happy about that at all, as you can see the reactions are…heated:
