‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’ Just Gave Fans Their First Look at Gandalf, and It’s Hiding in a Pop Song

Middle-earth has drawn plenty of talented filmmakers back into its orbit over the years, but few announcements carried quite as much emotional weight as the confirmation that Ian McKellen would return as Gandalf. After years of will-he-won’t-he speculation, including McKellen’s own past comments joking that he’d only come back if he was “still alive” by the time filming started, fans finally got their answer when he officially signed on for the franchise’s next chapter.

That confirmation set the stage for one of the most anticipated behind-the-scenes moments in recent memory: the first real glimpse of McKellen back in the role that defined so much of his late career. Given how carefully Warner Bros. has guarded details about the project, few expected that first look to surface the way it actually did.

A short video showing Ian McKellen fully suited up as Gandalf, complete with his signature long gray beard and hair, has surfaced online from the set of “The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum,” confirming that filming on the long-awaited prequel is now officially underway.

The clip appears to have been shared via singer and actor Troye Sivan, whose own presence in the footage briefly confused fans trying to figure out which “Troy” was referenced in the original post before realizing it referred to the “Party” singer rather than a Middle-earth location.

The behind-the-scenes moment shows McKellen having just finished hair and makeup, offering the clearest indication yet of how the actor will look reprising Gandalf after years away from the role. For a franchise built so heavily on visual continuity, that first glimpse alone carries significant weight for fans eager to see whether McKellen’s return will feel seamless with his earlier performances.

“The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum” is directed by Andy Serkis, who also returns to voice Gollum, working from a script co-written by Philippa Boyens alongside Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou. The film is set during the timeline of “The Fellowship of the Ring,” taking place 17 years after Bilbo Baggins’ 111th birthday party and just before Frodo Baggins departs the Shire for Rivendell, an interval not depicted in Peter Jackson’s original trilogy.

The plot follows Gandalf sending the ranger Aragorn on a mission to track down Gollum, driven by fear that the creature might reveal crucial information about the One Ring to Sauron. That premise gives the film room to explore a corner of Tolkien’s timeline that Jackson’s films largely skipped over, while still keeping the story tightly connected to the events fans already know.

Beyond McKellen and Serkis, the cast includes Elijah Wood reprising his role as Frodo Baggins, alongside Kate Winslet in a role yet to be detailed. Boyens, who also serves as a producer on the project, has described the story to Empire as “especially intense,” calling it a piece of previously untold history told through Gollum’s perspective.

Peter Jackson is also attached as a producer on the film alongside his longtime collaborators Fran Walsh and Boyens, with Warner Bros. emphasizing that the trio would be involved throughout the production. “The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum” is currently set for a theatrical release on December 17, 2027.
