Even a film as epic as ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers’ has a few hiccups hiding in plain sight. From quick continuity slips to props behaving strangely, these tiny glitches sneak by during all the chaos at Rohan and the thunder of Helm’s Deep. Once you notice them, you cannot help but spot them every time you rewatch. Here are some of the most talked about on set stumbles tucked inside the journey from the Riddermark to Isengard.

Legolas’s Changing Eye Color

New Line Cinema

Orlando Bloom wore colored lenses as Legolas, and their look is not always consistent within ‘The Two Towers’. In some scenes his eyes appear a bright ice blue while in others they lean darker or even hazel. Lighting and lens swaps between units made the effect vary more than intended. If you watch the march to Helm’s Deep and the keep interiors back to back you can see the shift clearly.

Gimli’s Height That Will Not Sit Still

New Line Cinema

John Rhys Davies played Gimli with a team of scale tricks that sometimes clash from shot to shot. One moment he stands chest high to Aragorn in a medium shot, then appears closer to hobbit height in a quick cut. The mix of scale doubles, forced perspective, and pickups created small mismatches. Helm’s Deep crowd shots and the causeway are where the change is easiest to spot.

Pippin’s Restraints Switching

New Line Cinema

When the Uruk horde drags Merry and Pippin across the plains, Pippin’s bindings do not stay consistent. His hands go from tied in front to tied behind between fast cuts of running and stumbling prisoners. Stunt setups and unit coverage triggered the swap during pickups. You can catch it during the nighttime chase before the Riders of Rohan attack.

Treebeard’s Forest Loop

New Line Cinema

Merry and Pippin ride in Treebeard’s branches through Fangorn, but the same patch of forest appears more than once. A distinct arrangement of roots and moss repeats as if they have circled back to the same track. Reused plates and limited safe paths for the large animatronic created the loop. It is most noticeable during the talk about going south and then north.

Éomer’s Riders Do A Headcount Shuffle

New Line Cinema

When Éomer meets Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli on the plains, the number of mounted warriors around him changes across angles. A wide shot shows a larger wedge, then a reverse angle pairs it down by several horses. Second unit inserts and reshoots on different days caused the shift. Look closely at the forming semicircle during the exchange about the burned bodies.

Aragorn’s Warg Cliff Fall Continuity

New Line Cinema

During the warg clash, Aragorn is dragged over the edge with sword and gear visible, yet the arrangement of his scabbard and knife changes once he washes ashore. A later cut shows items back in place that were missing a moment before. Multiple costume resets and wet wardrobe resets led to small mismatches. The shoreline recovery with Brego is where this is easiest to track.

Helm’s Deep Rain And Hair Reset

New Line Cinema

The siege at Helm’s Deep was shot across long nights with practical rain that does not always match between cuts. Hair that is soaked in one frame looks only damp in the very next, and droplets on armor come and go. Different camera units and reset timing created these quick changes. Watch Aragorn and Théoden on the wall as the Uruk ladders rise for clear examples.

Ladders And Extras That Blink In And Out

New Line Cinema

As the Uruk ladders slam the battlements, several background props and fighters swap positions across edits. A ladder that leans near Gimli in a wide shot vanishes in the immediate close up, then reappears from a new angle. Composites and practical resets during stunt rotations caused the blink. Scan the cutaways near the horn call and the causeway charge to catch it.

Legolas’s Shield From Surf To Nowhere

New Line Cinema

Legolas famously rides a shield down the stairs and fires on the move, but the shield’s afterlife is fuzzy. In the following beats the same shield is nowhere to be seen, and the elf draws and moves without it in shots that feel immediate. The prop was cleared between setups to keep stunt space safe, which created the jump. Check the series of shots from the gate to the inner wall for the gap.

Théoden’s Face Aging In Reverse Then Back Again

New Line Cinema

When Gandalf breaks Saruman’s hold, Théoden’s face transforms, but the makeup and hair do not always land in the same place after quick cuts. Some inserts show deeper lines or darker beard streaks than the surrounding shots. Pickups months later and differing makeup passes explain the subtle oscillation. The throne room sequence and the walk into daylight reveal the shifts most clearly.
