‘The Love Hypothesis’ Cast (With Photos)

The upcoming rom-com adaptation of Ali Hazelwood’s bestselling novel is bringing ‘The Love Hypothesis’ to the screen with a cast built around two leads whose chemistry has already generated significant buzz among fans of the book. The film follows Olive, a brilliant Ph.D. candidate focused on her future in academia, who impulsively kisses intimidating professor Adam Carlsen after realizing her best friend has fallen for her own crush. The story centers on Olive Smith, a third-year PhD candidate at Stanford University, who begins a fake relationship with the brooding yet brilliant professor.

‘The Love Hypothesis’ is set to release on Prime Video on September 23, 2026. Below is a look at the actors bringing Hazelwood’s beloved characters to life, along with what each of them brings to the project.

Lili Reinhart

Lili Reinhart, known for her role in ‘Chemical Hearts’, stars as Ph.D. candidate Olive. Reinhart will also executive produce the film, and she announced the news on Instagram in July with a photo of herself holding a copy of the book while wearing white scrubs. The Riverdale alum was confirmed for the role in mid-2025. She previously played Betty Cooper across all seven seasons of ‘Riverdale’ and also earned praise for her performance as Harper in ‘Hal & Harper.’

Tom Bateman

Tom Bateman, known for his role in ‘Hedda’, plays the intimidating professor Adam. The British actor is best known for appearing in the murder mystery films ‘Murder on the Orient Express’ and ‘Death on the Nile’, as well as the series ‘Da Vinci’s Demons’ and ‘Based on a True Story.’ Bateman is married to ‘Star Wars’ actress Daisy Ridley, who was his co-star in ‘Orient Express.’ After wrapping filming, Bateman spoke about discovering the depth of the book’s fan base during production, according to details shared by <a href=”https://www.swooon.com/1164192/the-love-hypothesis-movie-cast-release-date-updates/”>Swooon</a> from his interview with People.

Rachel Marsh

Rachel Marsh, known for her role in ‘Fallout’, plays Olive’s best friend Ahn. Marsh had her breakthrough this year on the FX comedy series ‘Adults’, in which she played Carly, and her other credits include ‘NCIS: Hawaii’, ‘Unstable’, ‘Just Beyond’, and ‘Head of the Class.’ Her casting, along with several other supporting players, was confirmed through an exclusive Deadline report in August 2025.

Nicholas Duvernay

Nicholas Duvernay, known for his role in ‘Reminders of Him’, plays Olive’s crush Jeremy. Duvernay recently made headlines for his performance in ‘The White Lotus’ Season 3, and he is also known for his roles in ‘Purple Hearts’, ‘Perfect Addiction’, and ‘My Dead Dad.’ His casting alongside the other newer additions was announced roughly one month after the two leads were confirmed.

Jaboukie Young-White

Jaboukie Young-White recently appeared in New Line’s AI themed thriller ‘Companion’ and will next star opposite Zoey Deutch, Ruby Cruz, and Jonah Hauer King in the indie rom-com ‘The Threesome.’ He is known for his work as a correspondent on ‘The Daily Show with Trevor Noah’ and has appeared in films like ‘C’mon C’mon’, ‘Set It Up’, and ‘Someone Great’, along with shows including ‘Crashing’, ‘Only Murders in the Building’, ‘Rap Sh!t’, ‘Black Mirror’, and ‘Abbott Elementary.’ In the film, his character Malcolm is Olive’s roommate, and an early clip shows him reacting with surprise as Adam calls his recent submissions subpar during an awkward introduction.

Arty Froushan

Arty Froushan can be seen in the Marvel and Disney Plus series ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ and is currently shooting its second season. He was recently seen as Buck Cashman in ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ and has also appeared in ‘House of the Dragon’, ‘Carnival Row’, and ‘Strike Back: Vendetta.’ He has upcoming roles in the third installment of the ‘Downton Abbey’ film franchise, releasing September 12, as well as Uni and Blumhouse’s ‘M3GAN’ spinoff ‘SOULM8TE’ and ‘H is for Hawk’ for Plan B.

Jeananne Goossen

Jeananne Goossen rounds out the ensemble playing Dr. Aslan. She appears in the film alongside the core cast of Rachel Marsh, Lili Reinhart, and Tom Bateman. While her role has been described in less detail than the leads, her casting adds another layer to Olive’s academic world as the story follows the PhD candidate through the pressures of her research and mentorship.
