‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ Just Posted a Surprisingly Underwhelming Disney+ Streaming Debut

Streaming debuts have become the true second chance for theatrical releases that stumbled at the box office, giving studios a way to reframe disappointing numbers as a simple platform mismatch. That narrative seemed tailor-made for Disney’s latest “Star Wars” entry, a franchise historically associated more with couch viewing than multiplex ticket sales.

The Mandalorian and Grogu” arrived in theaters back in May carrying exactly that kind of expectation gap, going on to become the lowest-grossing live-action “Star Wars” film ever despite Pedro Pascal’s returning performance earning some of the franchise’s best audience reception under Disney’s ownership. The prevailing theory heading into its streaming launch was simple: this was always meant to be a Disney+ hit that happened to detour through theaters first.

According to Nielsen data covering the film’s first five days on Disney+ following its September 2 debut, “The Mandalorian and Grogu” opened to the equivalent of 5.5 million complete views in the United States, a figure that lands firmly in the lower half of recent theatrical live-action releases on the platform rather than among its top performers. That number ties the film almost exactly with Marvel’s “Thunderbolts*,” which also opened to 5.5 million views in its own first five days on the service.

For a franchise as historically dominant as “Star Wars,” landing in a virtual tie with a mid-tier Marvel ensemble film rather than clearing the pack entirely marks a notable result. Looking at the broader chart of Pay-1 theatrical live-action releases on Disney+, the film’s 5.5 million views sit well below several of the platform’s stronger recent performers, including “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’s” 14.1 million and “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’s” 10.9 million in their respective first five days.

Looking at the numbers through a different lens, Nielsen’s weekly viewership data shows the film accumulated 727 million minutes watched during the week of August 31 through September 6, making it the second most-watched streaming movie that week behind Netflix’s “The Whisper Man,” and the tenth most-watched title on streaming overall. That places the film in a respectable but unspectacular position relative to the rest of the streaming landscape.

The film actually performed better in its very first week of availability, topping the streaming movie charts with 1.172 billion minutes watched during its debut window, before dropping to fourth place the following week with an additional 588 million minutes. That early spike suggests strong initial curiosity that cooled relatively quickly compared to some of Disney+’s stronger recent theatrical carryovers.

There is a silver lining buried in the numbers. According to FlixPatrol’s September 7 rankings, “The Mandalorian and Grogu” climbed to the No. 1 position on Disney+’s worldwide movie chart just five days after its streaming debut, edging out titles like “The Devil Wears Prada 2” and “Avengers: Endgame.” That top ranking suggests the film is finding a genuine audience on the platform, even if the raw viewership totals fall short of the franchise’s biggest names.

Domestically, the film opened to $102 million over its Memorial Day four-day weekend before finishing its theatrical run around $345.8 million worldwide, numbers that fell well below Disney’s expectations despite the film’s relatively modest production budget compared to other recent “Star Wars” entries.

Between a disappointing theatrical run and a streaming debut that landed closer to the middle of the pack than the top, “The Mandalorian and Grogu” has struggled to fully validate the theory that its box office performance was simply a matter of the wrong release format.
