‘The Matrix’ Director Lily Wachowski Challenges Hollywood After Elliot Page’s ‘The Odyssey’ Casting

Lily Wachowski is praising Christopher Nolan for giving Elliot Page a role in The Odyssey, but her comments are about much more than one casting decision. The filmmaker has used Page’s experience to question why more Hollywood directors and studios are not willing to give trans actors the same kind of opportunities, especially after they have already shown what they can do in major movies.

Page appears in Nolan’s The Odyssey as Sinon, a Greek soldier connected to the Trojan horse story. The film has become one of the biggest releases of the year, earning more than $1.5 billion worldwide. Despite that success and the attention around his performance, Page recently said that he has not received another acting offer since the movie came out. That contrast has raised fresh questions about how Hollywood treats trans performers.

Speaking with Variety, Wachowski praised Nolan for making the decision to cast Page in the first place. She said, “You’ve got to hand it to Christopher Nolan for casting Elliot in the first place,” describing the choice as a real example of allyship. Her comments were reported by Variety, which also highlighted the larger conversation around trans representation in Hollywood.

For Wachowski, the issue is not simply about whether one filmmaker is willing to cast a trans actor. She questioned why that kind of support is not more common across the industry. In her view, Hollywood still has a long way to go when it comes to giving trans performers meaningful chances instead of treating inclusion as something unusual or risky.

Page has spoken openly about the difficulties he has faced since transitioning. During an appearance on the On Film… With Kevin McCarthy podcast, he talked about the lack of work that followed The Odyssey and joked, “If someone wants to call me.” The comment, reported by TheWrap, showed the frustration behind what might otherwise sound like a simple career slowdown.

The actor also suggested that the problem goes deeper than the normal ups and downs of finding work in Hollywood. Page said that getting cast has become harder and connected that change to how the industry sees him after his transition. For an actor who had already built a successful career before coming out as transgender, the lack of new offers after a major blockbuster has made his situation stand out even more.

Wachowski understands that problem from her own experience. The filmmaker, who co-directed The Matrix movies with her sister Lana Wachowski, has spent years working in an industry where representation and identity can have a major impact on which stories get made and who gets hired. Her latest comments reflect her belief that Hollywood needs to move beyond simply celebrating a few high-profile examples of inclusion.

The Odyssey also placed Page in a particularly visible position. Nolan’s movie is a huge production with a major cast, and Page’s involvement gave him the chance to work with the director again after their previous collaboration on Inception. The role showed that a trans actor could be part of one of Hollywood’s biggest movies without the story being built around his gender identity.

That is part of why Wachowski’s comments have attracted attention. Nolan’s decision did not turn Page into a special case because he is trans. He simply gave him a role in a major film. Wachowski appears to be asking why more casting directors, producers and filmmakers cannot take the same approach.

Page’s casting also attracted criticism before The Odyssey was released, with some right-wing commentators targeting the decision. Nolan pushed back against that criticism and treated the controversy as separate from the movie itself. The film went on to become a major box office success, showing that Page’s presence did not stop audiences from turning out in huge numbers.

For now, it remains unclear whether Page’s comments or Wachowski’s criticism will lead to any real change. But their message is clear: one major role is not enough to prove that Hollywood has solved its representation problem. If the industry wants to show real progress, Wachowski believes trans actors need more chances to build careers, not just occasional moments of visibility in major productions.
