The Next James Bond Is Being Sought, and the Woman Finding Him Has Already Built Westeros and a Galaxy Far, Far Away
Few franchise searches in modern cinema history carry the weight of finding a new James Bond, and after years of rumors and fan campaigns, Amazon MGM Studios has confirmed that the hunt for 007’s next incarnation is very much underway. After several months of casting speculation, Amazon MGM Studios has officially announced that auditions for the iconic role are already in progress, marking a genuine turning point for a franchise that has kept the world guessing since Daniel Craig’s final bow in ‘No Time to Die’ back in 2021.
The upcoming film represents the first 007 project developed entirely under Amazon MGM’s creative control, with the studio stepping into the driver’s seat following Eon Productions yielding that authority. ‘Dune’ and ‘Arrival’ director Denis Villeneuve is attached to helm the picture, with ‘Peaky Blinders’ creator Steven Knight writing the screenplay, and producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman rounding out a formidable creative team. The combination of that talent on the production side has already generated considerable excitement in the industry, with the expectation that ‘Bond 26’ will feel like a genuine reimagining rather than a continuation.
The casting director chosen to find the next face of MI6 is where things get especially interesting. Amazon MGM has brought in Nina Gold to lead the search, drawing on her experience building out some of the most complex and beloved ensemble casts in prestige television and blockbuster cinema. Gold is best known for assembling the sprawling world of Westeros on HBO’s ‘Game of Thrones,’ and her credits also include Netflix’s ‘The Crown’ and five films in the Star Wars franchise, including casting Daisy Ridley as Rey in ‘The Force Awakens.’ For a role as singular and scrutinized as Bond, her ability to identify transformative talent before the world knows their name makes her a remarkably fitting choice.
Gold earned an Oscar nomination for Best Casting for her work on ‘Hamnet’ in 2025, the first year that category existed at the Academy Awards, adding another layer of prestige to an already impressive résumé. The studio, for its part, is playing the process close to the chest. Amazon MGM said it does not plan to comment on specific details during the casting process, while expressing excitement to share more with fans as soon as the time is right.
According to sources cited by Deadline, fully fledged screen tests are still some distance away, as Villeneuve and Knight continue refining the script, so fans eager for an announcement may need to temper their expectations for the near term. That has not stopped speculation from running rampant. Names including Jacob Elordi, Callum Turner, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Sam Heughan have all circulated as possible contenders, though none have been confirmed as part of the formal audition process.
Amazon paid more than eight billion dollars to acquire MGM Studios in 2022, and the Bond franchise was a central part of that calculation, which perhaps explains why the studio is approaching the casting decision with such deliberate care. Whoever steps into the role will inherit one of cinema’s most enduring legacies, and the team surrounding them already suggests something genuinely ambitious is in the works.
