‘The Odyssey’ Heads for a Staggering Finish as the Biggest R-Rated Movie Ever
Christopher Nolan has never been afraid of ambitious swings, but ‘The Odyssey’ may be his boldest gamble yet. Written by Nolan and produced with his wife Emma Thomas, the adaptation of Homer’s epic poem stars Matt Damon and carried a $250 million production budget, one of the most expensive of the director’s career. Analysts estimated it would need roughly $625 million to break even.
The film exceeded those expectations almost immediately. It opened to $123 million domestically before building strong momentum overseas, and it quickly surpassed ‘The Dark Knight Rises’, previously Nolan’s highest-grossing film at $1.085 billion, within its first few weeks.
Now ‘The Odyssey’ is nearing the end of its record-breaking run. According to Culture Crave, the film is set to finish its theatrical run with around $1.8 billion at the global box office, cementing its place as the highest-grossing R-rated film in history.
Current figures show it has already earned roughly $1.79 billion worldwide. That makes it Nolan’s biggest film ever, Universal’s highest-grossing release of all time and the eleventh-highest-grossing film ever made.
It is also the second-highest-grossing film of the year, trailing only Sony’s ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’, which crossed $2 billion this summer. The R-rated record came in August. ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ had held the crown for 2 years after finishing its run with $1.338 billion, until ‘The Odyssey’ overtook it about a month into its release.

The achievement is especially rare. ‘The Odyssey’, ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ and ‘Joker’ are the only R-rated films ever to gross $1 billion worldwide, and analysts have suggested it could be years before anything challenges Nolan’s new record.
The film also crossed $1 billion at the international box office alone, becoming just the 17th film in history to reach that milestone overseas. Format played a major role in the film’s success. ‘The Odyssey’ became the highest-grossing IMAX release in history, with audiences flocking to premium screens and 70mm presentations to see Nolan’s vision on the biggest canvas possible.

That demand helped set the stage for this winter’s premium-format battles. ‘Dune: Part Three’ has already broken first-day presale records at venues like London’s BFI IMAX, beating the previous record held by ‘The Odyssey’.
The film’s run has been a cornerstone of a remarkable year for theaters. Together, ‘The Odyssey’ and ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ contributed more than $1.5 billion to the summer box office, helping the season finish nearly 10% ahead of 2019.
Critics largely praised the film’s direction, performances and set pieces, though some took issue with Nolan’s deviations from the source material. Audiences clearly didn’t mind, turning an original, adult-oriented epic into one of the biggest movies of all time.

With 2 films now among the highest-grossing of all time, Nolan has proven he can deliver blockbuster numbers without relying on a franchise. Some analysts have joked that his biggest competition for the R-rated record may now be himself. As ‘The Odyssey’ sails toward its final total, it leaves behind a legacy that will be hard for any filmmaker to match.
Do you think any R-rated movie will ever beat The Odyssey’s record-breaking global box office?
