‘The Odyssey’ Is Now Expected to Gross a Staggering $1.7 Billion Worldwide

Christopher Nolan has spent the summer proving that a nearly three-hour, R-rated adaptation of a 3,000-year-old Greek epic could still dominate the modern box office landscape. Since opening in mid-July, ‘The Odyssey‘ has steadily climbed past one milestone after another, defying the usual assumptions about what kind of film can draw mainstream audiences at scale.

That momentum has already made the film Nolan’s highest-grossing release of all time, surpassing both ‘The Dark Knight’ and ‘The Dark Knight Rises,’ while also becoming the highest-grossing R-rated movie in history, ahead of 2024’s ‘Deadpool & Wolverine.’ With a worldwide total that had already climbed past $1.5 billion as of late August, the film shows little sign of slowing down heading into its final stretch of release.

According to a new projection circulating online, ‘The Odyssey’ is now expected to close out its global theatrical run with a total of roughly $1.7 billion, including more than $500 million generated through IMAX screens alone. If that figure holds, it would mark one of the most dominant IMAX performances in the format’s history for a single release.

That IMAX trajectory isn’t coming out of nowhere. As the first feature ever shot entirely using IMAX cameras, ‘The Odyssey’ has already become the format’s highest-grossing release of all time, having overtaken 2009’s ‘Avatar’ with $289 million in IMAX ticket sales as of two weeks into its billion-dollar run, according to Variety. IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond has described the film’s performance as evidence it “has crossed over from hit blockbuster to global cultural event,” a comment made as the film’s momentum first became undeniable.

Roughly 14 percent of that IMAX total has come specifically from the format’s rare 70mm screens, Nolan’s preferred way of presenting his films, with many of those limited locations selling out well into the fall. Given how much runway ‘The Odyssey’ still has left in markets like China and Japan, where it continues expanding its theatrical footprint, a final IMAX haul north of $500 million appears increasingly plausible.

The film’s broader worldwide total has continued to grow steadily even weeks into its release, with international markets accounting for the majority of its box office performance. According to tracking data from BoxOfficeHype, the film’s overseas total had already surpassed $1 billion by late August, with the film’s estimated $250 million production budget cleared several times over.

That kind of sustained international strength, combined with a still-expanding rollout across major Asian markets, is exactly the type of pattern that tends to produce the long, steady box office tail needed to reach a total as large as $1.7 billion. Combined with Nolan’s track record of drawing repeat viewers into premium formats specifically to experience his films the way he intended, ‘The Odyssey’ appears well positioned to keep climbing before its theatrical window finally closes.

Whether the final tally lands exactly at $1.7 billion or settles somewhat lower, ‘The Odyssey’ has already cemented itself as one of the defining box office stories of Nolan’s career. For a filmmaker who once needed ‘Barbie’ comparisons to measure his commercial ceiling, this latest projection suggests that ceiling may have been considerably higher than anyone expected.
