‘The Odyssey’ Just Beat a Local Phenomenon To Debut at Number One Overseas

Christopher Nolan has built one of the most devoted fanbases in Japan of any working director, making the country’s box office performance for any of his films a genuinely significant data point. That made the long wait for ‘The Odyssey’s‘ Japanese release, which arrived nearly two months after most of the rest of the world first saw the film, feel especially notable once the date finally landed.

That wait came with a genuine challenge attached. Japan’s 2026 box office calendar has been unusually stacked with major releases all year, and ‘The Odyssey’ arrived facing direct competition from ‘Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of Mermaid Island,’ a homegrown phenomenon based on the wildly popular manga and anime series that’s been dominating the local summer box office.

Despite that competition, ‘The Odyssey’ still managed to debut at number one in Japan, delivering a strong $4.2 million three-day opening weekend and surpassing the original theatrical debut of ‘The Dark Knight’ in the same market. For an R-rated, nearly three-hour original epic without any built-in franchise recognition, that result represents a genuinely strong showing.

That opening places ‘The Odyssey’ squarely in the middle of Nolan’s own Japanese box office history. It comfortably outpaced ‘Interstellar’s’ $1.6 million debut, ‘Oppenheimer’s’ $2.5 million, ‘Dunkirk’s’ $3 million, and ‘The Dark Knight’s’ $3.1 million, while landing just below ‘Tenet’s’ $4.4 million opening and well behind ‘The Dark Knight Rises”s $5.7 million and ‘Inception’s’ $8.9 million debuts.

Beyond the raw opening numbers, the film’s day-to-day performance has been particularly encouraging. Sunday alone added an estimated $1 million, marking just a 16.7% drop from Saturday’s numbers, an unusually small decline for an opening weekend that typically signals strong word-of-mouth carrying a film forward rather than a front-loaded debut fading quickly.

That word-of-mouth has translated directly into audience scores as well. ‘The Odyssey’ has maintained an overwhelmingly positive 4.4-star rating from Japanese audiences, marking the highest score of Nolan’s entire career in that market, a genuinely significant distinction given how consistently well his films have historically performed there.

Friday’s opening day alone brought in an estimated $2 million, a total that included $1.3 million from seven days of limited IMAX previews, dwarfing ‘Oppenheimer’s’ comparable $800,000 preview haul. That performance placed ‘The Odyssey’ as the fifth-biggest opening day of any Hollywood release in Japan so far in 2026, trailing only ‘Michael,’ ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2,’ ‘Toy Story 5,’ and ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ while comfortably outperforming titles like ‘Wicked: For Good,’ ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu,’ and ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.’

With the film already having crossed $600 million domestically and recently becoming Universal Pictures’ highest-grossing release of all time worldwide, this strong Japanese debut only adds further momentum toward the film’s continued climb up the all-time global charts. Given how well the film has held onto audiences week after week in territories that opened months earlier, there’s real reason to expect similarly strong legs in Japan going forward.
