‘The Odyssey’ Just Crossed $1.5 Billion, and It’s Not Showing Any Signs of Stopping

Christopher Nolan has built a career on films that blur the line between prestige filmmaking and genuine box office spectacle, but even by his own standards, this latest release has been operating in uncharted territory. What began as an ambitious gamble on a nearly three-hour, R-rated adaptation of an ancient epic poem has instead turned into one of the biggest theatrical phenomena of the decade.

That momentum has shown remarkably little sign of fading even seven weekends into the film’s release, a point in a blockbuster’s run where most titles have long since ceded the spotlight to whatever opens next. Instead, ‘The Odyssey‘ just kept climbing, and this past weekend delivered a milestone worth stopping to appreciate.

Overseas actuals came in even higher than expected for the epic, officially pushing ‘The Odyssey’ past $1.5 billion worldwide, according to figures shared by Luiz Fernando. The film pulled in an insane $49.3 million overseas on its seventh weekend alone, representing just a 27.5% drop compared to the previous frame, a hold that compares favorably against ‘Top Gun: Maverick’s’ 23% decline during a similar stretch of its own historic run.

Combined with its $563.9 million domestic total, ‘The Odyssey’ has now reached a $1.55 billion global cume on a reported $250 million production budget, officially surpassing ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash,’ ‘Top Gun: Maverick,’ and ‘The Avengers’ to become the 14th highest-grossing film in box office history.

The film’s climb up the all-time charts has carried extra significance for its studio as well. ‘The Odyssey’ has now overtaken ‘Furious 7’s’ $1.52 billion haul to become Universal’s second-biggest release of all time, trailing only the studio’s own ‘Jurassic World’ at $1.67 billion.

What makes the run particularly notable is how far it’s outpaced expectations set just weeks earlier. With IMAX screens extended in several markets through the end of September and Japan still yet to join the film’s international rollout, the $1.7 billion mark that once seemed like a realistic ceiling just two weeks ago is now effectively locked in as a new baseline for where the film will land.

That international strength has continued even as the film’s presence in China builds. ‘The Odyssey’ has already surpassed the lifetime totals of both ‘Jurassic World: Rebirth’ and ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ in the Chinese market, with its performance there reportedly outpacing ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ as well.

‘The Odyssey’ has also already crossed into rare historical territory beyond just Universal’s own rankings. The film became only the third R-rated release ever to gross more than $1 billion unadjusted for inflation, following 2019’s ‘Joker’ and 2023’s ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ making it the first R-rated, non-comic-book film to ever reach that milestone.

With another $1.6 billion or more expected by the end of this coming weekend and legs still holding strong on a global scale, industry watchers are now eyeing a final run somewhere between $1.75 and $1.9 billion worldwide. For a three-hour retelling of a nearly 3,000-year-old poem, that kind of staying power remains genuinely remarkable this deep into a theatrical release.
