‘The Odyssey’ Star Anne Hathaway Gives Tom Cruise’s ‘Digger’ a Perfect 10/10 in Her First Letterboxd Review
Few films this fall have divided audiences quite like ‘Digger’. Directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, the dark comedy casts Tom Cruise as Digger Rockwell, an arrogant oil tycoon whose greed sets off a global catastrophe before he races to prove he can save humanity.
Commercially, the film has struggled badly. It opened to an estimated $8 million domestically and has been reported as a potential loss of up to $200 million for Warner Bros., while IMAX quickly returned its premium screens to ‘The Odyssey’.
Now ‘Digger’ has picked up a high-profile supporter. Anne Hathaway posted her very first review on Letterboxd, awarding the film 5 stars and calling it a 10/10. The Oscar winner watched the film on October 7 and didn’t hold back. “I loved this brilliant movie. It’s smart and trippy and aggressive and funny and ambitious,” she wrote in her Letterboxd review.
She also encouraged audiences to make time to see it and decide for themselves what they think. Her own verdict was simple, ending with a perfect 10/10 and a shovel emoji. The Hollywood Handle shared the review on X.
Anne Hathaway gives a 5 star ⭐️ review for ‘DIGGER.’ “I loved this brilliant movie. It’s smart and trippy and aggressive and funny and ambitious. It’s worth making the time see and decide for yourself what you make of it. For me? 10/10” https://t.co/Ekb6rzmMeX

Hathaway is clearly a regular film fan. Her Letterboxd activity also shows recent viewings of ‘Verity’, ‘The End of Oak Street’ and ‘The Odyssey’, along with older classics. Her praise is especially notable given the box office timing. ‘Digger’ opened well behind Hathaway’s own thriller ‘Verity’, a Colleen Hoover adaptation with Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett that debuted with around $32 million.
Hathaway’s rave stands in contrast to the critical response. ‘Digger’ holds a 51% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, though audiences rated it higher at 71%. The film also earned a C+ CinemaScore and sits at 45 out of 100 on Metacritic. Its Rotten Tomatoes critics score is the lowest of Cruise’s films this decade.
A man. A plan. A meltdown. DIGGER. Only in theaters October 2. https://t.co/tHOTqXsWIM

Letterboxd has been kinder. The film holds a 3.8 out of 5 average there, slightly ahead of the 3.5 average for Cruise’s 1986 classic ‘Top Gun’. Hathaway isn’t the only industry figure defending the film. Ron Howard, who directed Cruise in ‘Far and Away’, praised it on X as impressive on many levels.
Guillermo del Toro and Glen Powell have also spoken up in support. Their endorsements have helped fuel a growing group of fans who argue the film deserves another look. Not everyone online is buying it. Some replies to the viral post suggested the praise was an effort to drive audiences to a struggling film.

Others agreed with Hathaway, describing ‘Digger’ as an ambitious, misunderstood work that could age well. That divide mirrors the wider reaction to the film since its release. With its theatrical run off to a rough start and IMAX screens gone, ‘Digger’ may ultimately find more viewers at home.
Support from stars like Hathaway could help build its reputation over time. For now, Hathaway has made her position clear. In her view, Iñárritu and Cruise’s bold experiment is well worth seeing.
Do you agree with Anne Hathaway’s 10/10 rating for Tom Cruise’s ‘Digger’?
