‘The Odyssey’ Wraps Up Its Epic Theatrical Run After 105 Days
Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ has been one of the defining box office stories of the year. The adaptation of Homer’s epic opened in US theaters on July 17 with a huge cast led by Matt Damon as Odysseus, and it quickly became one of the most talked-about releases of the summer.
The film got off to a strong start. It opened to $124.5 million domestically and $264.1 million worldwide, the biggest debut of Nolan’s career, then held strong with a drop of only about 30% in its second weekend.
Now the journey has come to an end. After 105 days, ‘The Odyssey’ wrapped up its US theatrical run with a final domestic total of $625.6 million, earning about $34,000 on its 15th Thursday from the last 144 theaters still showing it.
That puts the film at No. 2 among the highest-grossing R-rated films of all time domestically. It finished only about $11 million behind ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’, which holds the top spot with $636.7 million.
The film also ends as the 2nd-highest-grossing domestic release of the year, behind only ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’. For Universal, it ranks as the studio’s 2nd-biggest domestic release ever, trailing only ‘Jurassic World’ at $653.4 million.

Worldwide, the story is even bigger. ‘The Odyssey’ has earned roughly $1.78 billion to $1.79 billion globally, with more than $1.15 billion coming from international markets. That makes it the highest-grossing R-rated film ever worldwide, a title it took from ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ in August. It also passed ‘Jurassic World’ to become Universal’s highest-grossing film globally and ranks as the 11th-highest-grossing film of all time.
It’s easily Nolan’s biggest hit. The film passed ‘Oppenheimer’, which earned about $975 million worldwide, and became his first film to cross $1 billion since ‘The Dark Knight Rises’. The film’s format played a big part in its success. ‘The Odyssey’ was the first feature shot entirely on IMAX 70mm film cameras, using more than 2 million feet of film.

Large-format screens made up 53% of its opening, and IMAX 70mm showings sold out for weeks. IMAX reports it is now the company’s highest-grossing release ever, surpassing ‘Avatar’.
Alongside Damon, the cast includes Tom Holland as Telemachus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope and Robert Pattinson as Antinous. Zendaya plays Athena, Charlize Theron plays Calypso, and Lupita Nyong’o takes on a dual role as Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra.
Critics praised the direction, performances, and set pieces, though some questioned Nolan’s changes to the source material. Audiences clearly showed up anyway, giving the nearly 3-hour R-rated epic a domestic multiplier of about 5 times its opening weekend.
With a reported production budget of $250 million, the film had a high bar to clear, with estimated break-even figures between $625 million and $750 million. Its global total puts it well past that range.

Fans who missed it in theaters won’t have to wait long. ‘The Odyssey’ heads to digital, 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray in mid-November, after a brief return to select IMAX and 70mm screens in October.
Did The Odyssey deserve to become the highest-grossing R-rated film worldwide?
