Few stars embody global Hollywood stardom quite like Charlize Theron. The Benoni-born actress won the Best Actress Oscar for ‘Monster’ and has earned 3 Academy Award nominations over a career that spans everything from ‘Tully’ to ‘Atomic Blonde’.

This year has been another big one. Theron starred in ‘Apex’ and Christopher Nolan’s summer blockbuster ‘The Odyssey’, embarking on a global press tour with her castmates while wearing designs including Tom Ford by Haider Ackermann.

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures announced in August that Theron would receive its Icon Award, which celebrates an artist whose career has had a significant global impact. She was set to be honored alongside Colman Domingo, who received the Vantage Award, and John Carpenter, who received the Luminary Award.

“For our sixth annual Gala, we are honored to recognize John Carpenter, Colman Domingo and Charlize Theron, whose extraordinary careers exemplify the creativity, innovation and excellence that continues to move the industry forward,” Academy Museum Director and President Amy Homma said in a statement.

Ahead of the gala, Theron took part in museum programming with an evening featuring a screening of ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’. Speaking with members of the museum’s Teen Council, she wiped away tears while reflecting on her journey from small-town South Africa to Oscar glory.

On October 17, Theron finally arrived at the sixth annual Academy Museum Gala in Los Angeles to collect her honor. The Hollywood Reporter shared a video of her striking a confident pose on the carpet.

She wore a sheer black Tom Ford gown featuring a bodice embellished with shimmering sequins and gems near the neckline. The sleeveless design flowed into a floor-length skirt, with intricate lace and beadwork running through the silhouette.

Theron paired the look with Boucheron jewelry and her signature sleek, swept-back blonde hair. The choice of designer felt especially fitting, since Tom Ford served as one of this year’s gala co-chairs alongside Robert Rodriguez, Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw.

The gala, often called the “Met Gala of the West,” raises funds for the museum’s exhibitions, public screenings and educational initiatives. Presented in partnership with Rolex, the evening also featured a performance by Taylor Swift.

Theron was surrounded by a star-studded crowd that included Swift, Sabrina Carpenter, Kim Kardashian, Jacob Elordi and Kendall Jenner. Her fellow honorees, Domingo and Carpenter, also walked the carpet, with Carpenter arriving alongside his wife, Sandy King.

Much of Theron’s pre-gala programming centered on ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’, which earned 10 Academy Award nominations and won 6. During her conversation with the Teen Council, she reflected on initially struggling to understand her character, Imperator Furiosa.

She also shared that the role still resonates with audiences more than a decade later. It’s a fitting reminder of why the Icon Award, honoring global cultural impact, feels so well-suited to her career.

From her Oscar-winning turn in ‘Monster’ to action roles that redefined the genre, Theron has spent decades proving her range. Her latest projects show she has no plans to slow down. With the Icon Award now added to her accolades, her elegant Tom Ford moment felt like a celebration not just of fashion, but of a remarkable body of work.
