James Cameron may be busy making new technology and preparing more Avatar sequels, but he hasn’t completely left the Terminator world behind. The director has admitted that he is actually working on a new script for the franchise. The problem, though, is that writing it has become harder than ever.

Speaking recently on CNN’s The Amanpour Hour, Cameron opened up about his struggles.

He was there to discuss Ghosts of Hiroshima, a project about survivors of the atomic bombings, but the conversation shifted toward the connection between fiction and reality. When asked about how those ideas overlap, Cameron explained that the same problem has followed him into his new Terminator script.

He said that the challenge comes from how close science fiction feels to the real world now.

Cameron explained, “I’m at a point right now where I have a hard time writing science fiction. I’m tasked with writing a new Terminator story. I’ve been unable to get started on that very far because I don’t know what to say that won’t be overtaken by real events. We are living in a science fiction age right now, and the only way out is through, by using our intelligence, by using our curiosity, by using our command of technology.”

This isn’t the first time Cameron has talked about the future of the series. Back in 2022, while promoting Avatar: The Way of Water, he admitted that a reboot of the Terminator franchise was being discussed, though nothing had been decided at the time.

He later suggested that bringing back Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton in Dark Fate was a mistake, since the story might have worked better with a fresh start.

In the years that followed, both Schwarzenegger and Hamilton confirmed they were finished with the series. Schwarzenegger said in 2023 that the later movies were “not well-written,” while Hamilton said last year that she had done all she could with the role and questioned why anyone would want to relaunch the franchise again.

Despite that, Cameron hasn’t fully closed the door. In September of last year, he confirmed that he was still thinking about more Terminator films. He explained that any new version would keep the central themes of the story but leave behind the old imagery the series is known for.

For now, though, even James Cameron isn’t sure how to tell a story about the dangers of technology when real life already feels like science fiction.
