In the 1994 gothic vampire film Interview with the Vampire, two acting giants shared a screen for the first and last time. The film featured Tom Cruise as Lestat de Lioncourt, the charismatic vampire who transforms Louis de Pointe du Lac, played by Brad Pitt, into a creature of the night.

Directed by Neil Jordan and featuring a young Kirsten Dunst alongside Christian Slater, the movie was well-received by audiences and even managed to secure two Academy Award nominations. Despite its success, the production ignited a quiet rivalry between the two leads that would linger for several decades.

In a candid conversation with Entertainment Weekly, Pitt reflected on his experience as being largely miserable. He recalled spending six months in the f****ng dark during a bleak London winter at Pinewood Studios, an environment that nearly drove him to quit the project entirely.

Beyond the grueling atmosphere, Pitt found it difficult to find common ground with Cruise on a professional level. He felt that the script’s focus shifted the emotional weight of the story away from his character’s philosophical struggle.

In the original book, Louis is a man on a deep search for his identity, but Pitt felt that in the film, the sensational aspects of Lestat were made the pulse of the film. For him, this left nothing to do but sit and watch Cruise take center stage.

This disparity in their roles was compounded by the fact that the two men simply operated in different ways. Pitt once described their personalities by saying they walk in different directions, famously comparing Cruise to the North Pole and himself to the South.

He felt that an underlying competition always existed between them, which prevented any genuine connection or conversation from forming on set. While he admitted the tension bugged me a bit, Pitt was quick to note that it was never overtly nasty and even praised Cruise as a good actor who often takes unfair criticism because he is at the top of the industry.

Interestingly, Cruise isn’t the only star on Pitt’s selective radar. Former co-star Aaron Taylor-Johnson once revealed that Pitt maintains a s**t list of actors he refuses to work with, prioritizing a positive environment and light and joy in his later career.

As of this year, Pitt has plenty of reasons to stay joyful as his career reaches a new creative peak. He is currently filming the intense drama The Riders in Greece, where he was recently spotted on the island of Hydra looking battered and bloodied for an emotional scene.

Directed by Edward Berger, the film follows a father’s desperate search across Europe for his missing family and is expected to be a major contender for next year’s awards season. Additionally, Pitt has recently wrapped production on The Adventures of Cliff Booth, a highly anticipated Netflix sequel to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, directed by David Fincher.
