The Reason Uma Thurman (55) Never Lived in Los Angeles
Uma Thurman recently shared a rare reflection on her decades-long career, suggesting that her decision to avoid the Hollywood lifestyle may have come with professional trade-offs. Despite her status as an iconic action star and a frequent collaborator of Quentin Tarantino, the actress chose to maintain her primary residence in New York.
During a candid cover story for InStyle, the 55-year-old star confessed that her geographical distance from the heart of the movie business was a source of long-term contemplation. “I actually always wished I had moved to Los Angeles,” she admitted when discussing her connection to the film industry.
Thurman rose to global prominence with her Academy Award-nominated performance in Pulp Fiction and the physically demanding Kill Bill series. However, she believes that by skipping the Los Angeles scene, she might have missed out on a more integrated relationship with the Hollywood community.
The actress revealed that there was a specific period in her life when she came very close to making the move out west. As her career reached its peak, the professional demands in California became increasingly difficult to manage from the East Coast.
“I even got an apartment there at one point because I was working there really frequently, and as soon as I signed the lease, I got pregnant with my daughter within, like, six weeks,” she shared. This unexpected development shifted her focus entirely toward her growing family and away from a permanent move.
While she remains content with her life in the East, Thurman acknowledged that staying in New York created a certain level of isolation from her peers. “I never did time in Los Angeles, and because of that, I kind of never integrated into the community of my own profession, and I think that’s too bad,” she explained.
Instead of building connections within Hollywood circles, Thurman found her sense of community elsewhere, much closer to home. “I had more of a community with the other mothers at pickup on 16th Street and Rutherford Place, and that’s OK. But I wish I’d had that chapter. I think I really would have liked it,” she added.
Despite the professional trade-offs, Thurman emphasized the importance of finding joy in whatever path one chooses to follow. “I think the choice to be happy is one that should be made, regardless of any conditions,” she noted.
Uma Thurman has remained consistently active in recent years, starring in the 2024 thriller The Kill Room alongside her daughter, Maya Hawke. She also appeared in the romantic comedy Red, White & Royal Blue and the Netflix series Chambers, showcasing her ability to navigate both film and streaming platforms.
Some of her other recent projects include Old Guard 2, where she stars alongside Charlize Theron. She also appeared in the film Oh, Canada, directed by Paul Schrader, which features a cast including Richard Gere and Jacob Elordi.
Maya Hawke, her eldest daughter with ex-husband Ethan Hawke, has become a major star in her own right through her role in Stranger Things. The mother-daughter duo has expressed interest in working together more frequently, marking a new era for the Thurman-Hawke family legacy.
