‘The Rings of Power’ Season 3 Finally Reveals Its Anarion, and Fans Can’t Stop Staring
Middle-earth is gearing up for war again, and this time the fight is creeping closer to Gondor’s roots. Season 3 of ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power‘ is rooted heavily in Sauron’s psychology, following years of failed attempts to forge the One Ring. With the war expanding across the continent, the show’s creative team has been steadily rolling out new faces meant to carry that fight forward.
That rollout hit a new gear at San Diego Comic-Con this year. During a Friday Hall H panel, Prime Video debuted a fresh trailer and confirmed a wave of new characters joining the ensemble, including a king of Gondor named Anarion. Fans had been speculating about this casting for months, and now they finally have a face to put with the name.
That face belongs to Andrew Richardson, and the news broke wide when Nexus Point News shared a first look image of him in full battle gear as Anarion, sword slung over his shoulder, confirming the character’s premiere alongside the show’s November 11 return to Prime Video. For those catching up, Anarion is Elendil’s younger son and Isildur’s brother, which places Richardson’s character squarely inside one of Tolkien’s most consequential bloodlines heading into Sauron’s endgame.
Richardson isn’t walking onto the show alone. He joins Eddie Marsan as Thrain, the older brother of King Durin IV, and Adam Young as the mysterious new character Marnûkh, both revealed as part of the same casting wave. Marnûkh has been billed as a mysterious orc who may not be what he seems, adding a layer of intrigue to a season already stacked with new threats.
The scale of the new season goes well beyond casting reveals. Comic-Con attendees also got a surprise appearance from four imposing Nazgûl-style figures storming Hall H in full armor, introduced as Sauron’s ring-servants from the Second Age. The panel also confirmed that the Balrog will return this season and speak on screen for the first time, voiced by Simon Pegg, a reveal that reportedly drew one of the loudest reactions of the entire presentation.
Story-wise, the new season picks up further along than some expected. Only five years will have passed between the Season 2 finale and the Season 3 premiere, keeping the timeline tighter than the show’s usual generational leaps. In that gap, Tar-MÃriel has gone into exile following the coup in Númenor and is now rallying resistance, while the dwarf lords search for the rings Durin has hidden away, with Durin’s own children now portrayed as teenagers.
As for when viewers actually get to see Anarion, Thrain, Marnûkh, and the rest of this expanded cast in action, the wait is almost over. The first four episodes of Season 3 arrive November 11, with two more episodes following on November 18 and the final pair closing out the season on November 25.
Richardson’s Anarion enters a story already burdened by prophecy and bloodline, so it’s worth asking how fans think this quieter Gondorian prince will hold up once Sauron’s war reaches his family’s doorstep.
