The stakes are being raised dramatically, with McKay warning that this third season is darker and more dangerous than anything that came before, and that no one is safe. That shift lines up with new promotional images showing Vickers’ Sauron fully crowned and armored, done hiding behind the Halbrand or Annatar disguises fans have watched him wear for two seasons.
Vickers reportedly found the forging sequence deeply affecting to film, with the actor saying he cried when he arrived on set for the scene, which took two weeks to shoot according to Empire’s world-exclusive, three day on set report at Shepperton Studios. That kind of emotional weight suggests the show is treating this moment with the reverence Tolkien diehards have been hoping for.
Season 3 also dramatizes the War of the Elves and Sauron, a Second Age conflict distinct from the more famous War of the Last Alliance seen in Peter Jackson’s original trilogy, giving the show a chance to explore territory largely untouched on screen before. The season will reportedly reunite Daniel Weyman, Morfydd Clark, and Robert Aramayo alongside Vickers as the story pushes toward its darkest chapter yet.
‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ Season 3 premieres on Prime Video on November 11, 2026, with Amazon reportedly already developing a fourth season to continue the planned five season arc.
