  • Article Breakdown:
  • Atla is a secondary character in The Rising of the Shield Hero, but she has one of the most intimate and carefully crafted stories in the whole series, which is what makes her so special and so important.
  • When we first see her, she is suffering from a weak constitution and is bought by Naofumi as his slave. Later, though, he gives her a miraculous medicine that makes her a lot of better and, thus, grateful to the Shield Hero.
  • Later in the series, as the group is fighting one of the Guardian Beasts, Phoenix, Atla decides to sacrifice herself to protect Naofumi and his allies, with her body being absorbed by the Shield and her soul lingering on.

Atla’s story is sad and filled with tragedy

Atla is introduced to the series as a demihuman with the appearance of a White Tiger and Fohl’s sister. She was born blind and initially afflicted with a poor constitution and numerous ailments. After Naofumi buys her as a slave, she receives Yggdrasil, a potent medication that stimulates healing outside of the eyes and is triggered by the Legendary Shield’s powers. Sensing the kindness within her, she falls in love with Naofumi and commits herself to capturing his heart and supporting him in his battle against the Waves.

To Naofumi’s dismay, she is unyielding and pushy, frequently attempting to speak on her behalf and thanking those who do her favors while threatening to kill her opponents. She becomes Raphtalia’s sparring partner since she views her as a competitor. Her natural ability to detect chi allows her to see her surroundings. She practices light fist martial arts, frequently copying Hengen Muso’s techniques. She is regarded as a prodigy because, despite her prior ailments and her brother’s lack of battle experience, she can readily subdue and defeat opponents with stronger physical or defensive capabilities.

But, she does die in the series, and we are going to explain what happened.

Atla sacrificed herself to save Naofumi, but her soul lingers on

Atla has been around for a while and her death in The Rising of the Shield Hero came late(r) into the series. Her death happened in Volume 15 of the light novel series.

Namely, when Naofumi and the Coalition Army fought Phoenix, one of the Guardian Beasts, Atla had a very important moment. During the battle, namely, Alta gives her life in the battle against the Phoenix, the powerful Guardian Beast, in order to keep Naofumi and the Coalition Army safe. As she passes away while Naofumi is carrying her, she kisses him and declares her love for him, pleading with him to consider the emotions of the people around him. But this was not the end of her story.

In Volume 16, a grand funeral was held for all those who passed away, including Atla. After the funeral, Naofumi enters the world of the legendary weapons, wanting to talk to the Shield Spirit there. But, although he knew that Atla’s body was absorbed by the Legendary Shield, revealing the Compassion Shield of the Blessing Series, he thought that he wouldn’t see her anymore. But, when Atla appeared alongside Ost to speak on behalf of the Shield Spirit, he was surprised. So, while she is dead, Atla’s soul is still in the Legendary Weapon’s spirit realm, where she and Ost make an appearance to tell Naofumi about the identity of the person behind the Waves. And it seems that she will remain in this capacity for the series.
