The Shocking Detail Behind Margaret Qualley’s Cleavage in ‘The Substance’ Revealed
Margaret Qualley is opening up about how far she had to go to transform for her new movie The Substance.
In an interview with The Sunday Times, Qualley explained that her role required a very specific look that she could not achieve naturally. The director wanted a bold, exaggerated style inspired by older Hollywood and animated characters. Because of that, a prosthetics team was brought in to change her appearance.
She described the process in a very direct way, saying, “Unfortunately there is no magic b*** potion, so we had to glue those on.” She also added, “Coralie found an incredible prosthetic team to endow me with the rack of a lifetime, just not my lifetime.”
The film itself focuses on a story about aging and image. Demi Moore plays a celebrity who uses a mysterious drug to create a younger version of herself, which is played by Qualley. The project has already been discussed widely, especially after its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Qualley also spoke about how difficult some scenes were for her. One moment involved a very confident and sexual dance performance. She admitted it did not come naturally to her and said it was emotional during rehearsals.
Margaret Qualley confirmed that the boobs shown in ‘The Substance’ (2024) are not real. They were silicone prosthetics created by expert Pierre Olivier Persin. She also wore pads on her hips.

The physical side of the role was just as intense. According to the Los Angeles Times, the special effects were created by makeup artist Pierre Olivier Persin. At one point, Qualley had to wear heavy prosthetics that combined features of both her character and Moore’s. She described that experience by saying, “I was in there, with [Demi’s] face plastered onto my own body.”
Filming those scenes was not easy. She said, “I was alone in that thing. I was running into things. It was a torture chamber.” The process lasted several days, and she admitted it pushed her to her limit. She even said, “We would just go until I had a panic attack.” Removing the prosthetics was also risky, as she explained, “The tempting thing is you want to peel it off, but of course you can’t do that, because you’ll bring your skin with you.”
The film shows how far actors sometimes go to bring a character to life, both emotionally and physically.
This kind of dedication is impressive but also a bit extreme. It shows how demanding movie roles can be, especially when heavy makeup and prosthetics are involved. At the same time, it raises questions about how far actors should push themselves for a role.
