‘The Social Reckoning’ Star Wunmi Mosaku (40) Glows in Gold at the Academy Museum Gala After Her Breakout Year
Few actors have had a year quite like Wunmi Mosaku, and her latest red carpet appearance felt like a victory lap. The Nigerian-British actress earned her first Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for playing Annie in Ryan Coogler’s ‘Sinners’.
The film itself made history. ‘Sinners’ scored a record-breaking 16 Oscar nominations, surpassing the previous record shared by ‘All About Eve’, ‘Titanic’ and ‘La La Land’. Mosaku’s rise has been years in the making. Born in Zaria, northern Nigeria, in 1986, she studied acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, graduating in 2007.
She went on to build a strong résumé in the UK, including pairing up with Idris Elba in season 5 of the BBC detective drama ‘Luther’ and starring in ‘Passenger’. She also entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Hunter B-15 in ‘Loki’ before her career-defining turn in ‘Sinners’.
When the nominations were announced, she told Spectrum News, “This nomination means more to me than I can possibly put into words.” She went on to praise the care, courage, and love that went into making the film.

Months after the Oscars, Mosaku is still shining on Hollywood’s biggest stages. On October 17, she attended the sixth annual Academy Museum Gala in Los Angeles. She wore Louis Vuitton for the occasion, returning to the house she chose for her green Oscars gown back in March. Her gala look was a column gown covered in shimmering gold and bronze paillettes, with slim straps, a sweetheart-style neckline and a dramatic thigh-high slit.
Mosaku kept her styling polished and confident, pairing the gown with black pointed pumps and her signature short hairstyle. Striking a pose with one hand on her hip, she let the metallic shimmer catch every flash on the carpet.

Reactions online were overwhelmingly positive. Fans described her as looking like a goddess and called the dress spectacular, while others said she wears everything beautifully. Some commenters also reflected on her journey, noting how glad they were to see her finally getting the success she deserves after years of strong work in British television.
The gala raises funds for the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, supporting its exhibitions, screenings and educational initiatives. This year’s edition honored Charlize Theron with the Icon Award, Colman Domingo with the Vantage Award and John Carpenter with the Luminary Award.
Mosaku joined a star-studded guest list that included Taylor Swift, Kim Kardashian, Elle Fanning, Mikey Madison and Jamie Lee Curtis. Swift was set to perform during the evening, adding even more buzz to the night.

The actress has kept up a packed schedule since awards season. She attended the premiere of ‘The Life and Deaths of Wilson Shedd’ at the Toronto International Film Festival and the UK premiere of ‘Africa Earth’s Wild Home’ at BAFTA in London in late September.
With every appearance, Mosaku continues to prove that her breakout moment was only the beginning. Her golden gala look felt like a fitting celebration of a year that changed her career.
