Yesterday, Sony Pictures Animation announced the upcoming release of a short film titled ‘The Spider Within,’ scheduled to debut on YouTube on March 27th at 6 a.m. PT.

This short film is set within the ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ universe and centers around Miles Morales. It follows Miles as he navigates the complexities of being a teenager, friend, student, and superhero. Amidst these challenges, Miles begins experiencing panic attacks, leading him to confront the manifestations of his anxiety. Through this journey, he learns the importance of seeking support, understanding that reaching out for help is just as courageous as defending his city against villains.

The digital release partners with the Kevin Love Fund and will be part of their mental health lesson plan named ‘The Hero Within.’ This plan encourages students to talk about mental health through activities like creating storyboards.

Jarelle Dampier, the short’s director, shared their thoughts on what the film means for those facing mental health challenges and their goals for it.

Miles represents so many of us doing the best we can in our day-to-day lives. We don’t often realize all that we’ve been through until our own body forces us to become aware of its experience. My intention is that ‘The Spider Within’ can motivate deeper conversations amongst friends & family about their own mental health journeys — and I hope it feels like a love letter to those who adore Miles Morales.

‘The Spider Within’ happens in the Spider-Verse and is the third part of the animated series. ‘Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse’ is in the works. Got something to say? Drop a comment below!
