The Upside Down is going back further in time. The ‘Stranger Things’ prequel is heading somewhere new, and it looks like the story may involve aliens. Matt and Ross Duffer have left Netflix for Paramount but still oversee everything related to Hawkins, and now they’re giving fans a look at what happened long before Will Byers disappeared.

The series has an official title. Netflix dropped a first teaser on Friday for ‘Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure’, a prequel to the sci-fi hit, which finished its Emmy-winning 5-season run last year. Netflix held the announcement for Stranger Things Day, Nov. 6, the day Will Byers disappeared in the original series.

The teaser also includes a striking image. DiscussingFilm shared a still showing a dark shape with glowing blue lights hovering in a stormy sky, calling it a first look at a UFO in the prequel series. Deadline described the teaser as showing a deserted bike by a restricted area at night, with town lights in the distance and an ominous disturbance in the sky that resembles a wormhole forming.

The UFO imagery matches other hints. The Hollywood Reporter noted that the title, the 1950s setting, and a hint in the Duffers’ statement suggest the show has a UFO, aliens, or outer space theme. That hint was a short phrase telling fans to keep their eyes on the sky, which Cosmic Book News points out is classic 1950s alien invasion movie talk, fitting the decade the new series is set in.

Not everyone thinks the show is simply about little green men. SFF Gazette suggested that the Upside Down will likely be mistaken for an alien invasion, which would let the series use classic flying saucer paranoia while keeping its own mythology. Others are more cautious, noting that how that might fit in with the Upside Down and the wider ‘Stranger Things’ universe remains to be seen.

The setting is specific. The teaser places the story on April 19, 1955, in Marion, Nevada. That puts it a few years before the Nevada experiment in the stage play ‘Stranger Things: The First Shadow’, which is set in 1959, and before both the flagship series and the play.

Henry Creel’s origins seem to be part of it too. The Duffers have teased that the spinoff would focus on events before Henry Creel was exposed to the otherworldly substance that gave him his powers, and Matt Duffer previously said the series will explain the rock young Henry finds in a scientist’s briefcase. The teaser even nods to him musically: “Sh-Boom” by The Chords plays in Season 5, Episode 4 of ‘Stranger Things’ when Max visits the memory of Henry at Hawkins High.

The franchise has new leadership. The Duffers will serve as co-creators but have handed creative duties to longtime ‘Stranger Things’ writer Kate Trefry, who also wrote ‘The First Shadow’ stage play, and Golden Globe-winning director Joe Wright (‘Atonement’), who will direct the first 3 episodes. The series will have an all-new cast and story.

The teaser also has familiar touches. It brings back the iconic bicycle and radio from the original series, but this time the story takes place away from Hawkins, in Nevada. One fan-shared tagline sums up the change: “Before Hawkins there was Marion, Nevada.”

There’s still a long wait ahead. Production will start shortly in New Mexico, with a cast to be announced later. No confirmed release date has been announced, but the series is expected sometime in 2028.

For now, fans have one eerie image to study. Whether that shape in the sky turns out to be a spacecraft, a tear between dimensions, or something new, ‘Other Worlds’ is clearly building its mystery around what’s happening above Marion.
