A new look at The Super Mario Galaxy Movie surprised fans at The Game Awards 2025, giving everyone a short but lively teaser of the upcoming film.

The sneak peek comes months before the movie’s release and follows the huge success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie from 2023, which earned more than $1.3 billion worldwide. The project is once again led by Illumination’s Chris Meledandri and Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto, continuing their partnership with the Mario franchise.

The teaser focuses on a tense moment inside Princess Peach’s castle. According to the footage shown at The Game Awards, Bowser Jr. corners Mario and Luigi with a magical paintbrush in hand and demands that they bring him his father.

Earlier trailers revealed that Bowser has been shrunk and locked inside a tiny castle kept within Peach’s fortress. In the clip, Luigi tries to calm Bowser Jr. by introducing himself, but the situation quickly gets worse. Bowser Jr. strikes Mario after his paintbrush transforms into a dangerous weapon, and the brothers end up fighting back. Luigi even lands a knee strike that many fans online say reminds them of Captain Falcon.

The film continues the Mario universe by bringing characters into outer space, inspired by the 2007 game Super Mario Galaxy. It is directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, with Matthew Fogel writing the script. Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, and Kevin Michael Richardson return to their roles, while Benny Safdie and Brie Larson join the cast for the first time.

Illumination and Nintendo are producing the movie, with Universal Pictures handling distribution.

Nintendo’s interest in expanding its movie projects began years ago. In 2021, company president Shuntaro Furukawa said Nintendo would consider making more animated films if the Mario movie performed well. After the 2023 movie became a hit, Illumination confirmed in March 2024 that a new animated Mario film was already in the works, bringing back the same directors and writer.

The new film is set to arrive in U.S. theaters on April 3, 2026. This time, Mario and Luigi team up with Princess Peach and Toad for a journey across the galaxy as they try to stop Bowser Jr., who steps in as the main threat while his father remains trapped.
