‘The Vampire Diaries’ Star Ian Somerhalder Says He and Nikki Reed Built an 8-Figure Debt After Walking Away From Hollywood
Ian Somerhalder is opening up about a difficult chapter in his life after stepping away from acting, and the story involves a major financial setback.
In an interview with E! News, the former The Vampire Diaries star shared that he and his wife, Nikki Reed, faced serious money problems after he left Hollywood. He explained that a business decision went wrong and led to huge losses.
“I retired from acting seven years ago. I left an insanely lucrative career in television after a financial upheaval from building a business that I didn’t build properly,” he said. He added that things got worse due to fraud, which made the situation even harder. “And due to fraud, it put my wife and I into an eight-figure hole.”
Somerhalder said the situation escalated after he made large financial guarantees to a bank. He described how everything quickly fell apart. “It all came crashing down,” he said.
To recover, the couple had to make big sacrifices. They sold many of their belongings to get out of debt. “Eight figures is a hard hole to climb out of,” he admitted. “But Nikki and I did it. You know, she really negotiated us out of this deal, but we sold houses, paintings, cars, watches, everything.”
He also reflected on how different things could have been. “I mean, I should have been retiring off of one of the biggest TV shows in the world,” he said, speaking about his time on The Vampire Diaries.
Today, Somerhalder is focused on business instead of acting. He co-founded Brother’s Bond Bourbon with his former co-star Paul Wesley. He and Reed also launched The Absorption Company, which sells powdered supplements.
The couple now lives a quieter life with their children. They moved to a farm near Los Angeles and are focused on building their businesses and raising their family. Somerhalder previously told People that they are working on multiple companies while raising their kids at the same time.
He also shared some advice for couples who want to start a business together. “The ups and the downs in the journey are supposed to be fun,” he said. “The grind is supposed to be fun.” He added, “Find the beauty in all of it.”
Somerhalder made it clear he has no regrets about leaving acting. In another interview with E! News, he said, “I loved what I did for a really long time. I don’t miss any of it.”
This story shows how quickly things can change, even for someone successful in Hollywood. It also shows how important it is to have the right support system during hard times. Ian and Nikki seem to have handled a very tough situation and came out stronger. What do you think about their story? Would you take the same risk and leave a big career for business?
