‘The Walking Dead: Dead City’ Season 4 Is Still Undecided, But the Signs Are Building

The zombie drama that reunited Maggie Rhee and Negan Smith in the ruins of Manhattan has closed out its third run, and now the conversation has shifted entirely to what comes next. ‘The Walking Dead: Dead City’ wrapped its season three finale on September 13, and the episode left the door wide open for a fourth chapter as the finale, titled Tenebrae, aired that Sunday.

AMC has not made anything official, but the people actually running the show have been unusually candid about wanting to keep going. Between cast comments, showrunner interviews, and critical reception, there is more public momentum behind a season four of ‘Dead City’ than there has been in months.

‘Dead City’ Season 4 Renewal Status

As of this writing, AMC has not renewed ‘The Walking Dead: Dead City’ for a fourth season, and the network is still weighing the usual mix of viewership and audience retention data before making a call. AMC typically evaluates several metrics before deciding on a renewal, including how many viewers a show draws initially and how steep the drop off becomes afterward.

That drop off has been real for ‘Dead City’. The series premiered to roughly 700,000 viewers back in 2023, but that number has since fallen to an average of around 300,000 for its most recent episodes. Season three ran for eight episodes and brought back a familiar ensemble around Maggie and Negan.

Despite the softer numbers, the show has not been without institutional support. AMC has generally been generous with its Walking Dead universe spinoffs, several of which, including Daryl Dixon and Fear the Walking Dead, have gone on to multiple seasons. If AMC does move quickly on a renewal, one outlet estimates ‘Dead City’ could realistically return as early as late 2027.

The timing matters more than usual right now because the broader Walking Dead universe is thinning out. Daryl Dixon is set to conclude after its own fourth season, which would leave Dead City as essentially the last active entry in the franchise if it continues.

‘Dead City’ Season 3 Finale

Season three built toward a genuinely chaotic final stretch centered on Jimmi Simpson’s Dillard, whose unraveling drove most of the finale’s conflict. Dillard took Raúl Castillo’s Dr. Luis hostage, killed his own sister and community leader Renata, and launched a campaign against Negan after Negan killed several of Dillard’s closest allies.

That set up a full scale community fight. Maggie, Negan, and Hershel rallied their people to push back, with Hershel demonstrating just how far he was willing to go to protect their home. The showdown itself got personal fast.

Dillard forced Negan to stab Maggie before turning on Negan himself, and the confrontation ended with Dillard losing an arm and being thrown to the walkers. The fallout reshaped where Maggie and Negan stand with each other heading into any future season.

In the aftermath, Maggie put away her wedding ring and finally accepted that Negan had become family to her, even without offering him full forgiveness, while Negan chose to stay in Manhattan as Maggie made him sheriff and her second in command as she set her sights on reclaiming the rest of New York.

Maggie And Negan’s Evolving Partnership

The core appeal of ‘Dead City’ has always been the relationship between two characters bound together by tragedy, since Negan killed Maggie’s husband Glenn during the original series. Season three pushed that dynamic further than any prior run, moving Maggie and Negan from a wary alliance into something closer to real partnership.

Speaking with Collider, Cohan described the season as feeling like a run of firsts for the franchise, touching on Maggie’s state of mind and how every character in the show is broken in some way. That conversation, along with a separate interview showrunner Seth Hoffman gave to Collider, offered the clearest look yet at how the creative team wants to keep redefining Maggie and Negan’s relationship if the show continues.

Hoffman, who previously worked on several seasons of the original series before taking over ‘Dead City’, told Collider he wants future seasons to keep experimenting while still feeling like classic Walking Dead. He specifically pointed to clearly defining where Maggie and Negan’s partnership goes from here as a priority for any potential season four.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan has echoed that enthusiasm publicly, indicating in a recent interview that he and the creative team already have story ideas involving Maggie and Negan that have excited him more than almost anything else in his time on the franchise. Both Morgan and Cohan hold executive producer credits on the series, which gives them real influence over where those stories could ultimately go.

‘Dead City’ Season 4 Cast Expectations

If AMC does greenlight another season, the returning cast is fairly predictable given how season three ended. Lauren Cohan as Maggie Rhee and Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Negan would almost certainly lead any fourth season, continuing the partnership the finale set in motion.

Cohan has been the most vocal about what a new season could look like creatively. She told People that the team behind the show has plenty of unconventional ideas for another season, adding that if those ideas can still surprise her and Morgan after this many years on the franchise, they will surprise fans too.

She has also pushed back on the idea that the Walking Dead universe is running out of road, describing its potential as effectively endless even after more than a decade of the original series and its various spinoffs. That confidence lines up with how season three performed with critics.

The season currently holds a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes, which is about as strong a critical signal as the franchise has produced in years and gives AMC one more reason to seriously consider bringing Maggie and Negan back for another round.
