The ‘Whalefall’ Popcorn Bucket Is Here, and Yes, You Eat Straight Out of the Whale’s Belly
Collectible popcorn buckets have officially crossed from novelty into a full-blown craze. Every few weeks, a new movie tie-in container arrives that is stranger, bigger, or more expensive than the last one. The latest entry might be the most on-brand design yet.
Studios have figured out that a quirky concession item can generate as much buzz as a trailer. That’s especially true for films with a hook so simple it practically begs for merchandise, which is where a certain sperm whale comes in.
On September 30, DiscussingFilm shared a first look at the ‘Whalefall’ popcorn bucket on X. The image shows a sperm whale lying underwater with popcorn spilling out of its open body, a tiny scuba diver hovering nearby. Text on the graphic reads “Collectible Popcorn Container” and notes that it comes with a large popcorn.
Bloody Disgusting revealed that the official name is the Whalebucket, and that it will be available at Regal Cinemas and Cinemark. It was also described as a sperm whale with a hinged opening for the popcorn and a small diver near its head. Based on the first photos, the whale runs close to 2 feet long, though capacity has not been announced.
The bucket’s rollout has 2 main paths so far. Regal is hosting early 4DX screenings on October 14 that include a complimentary Whalebucket and popcorn with admission, while supplies last. For everyone else, Dread Central reported that the bucket goes on sale October 15 at select Regal locations and comes with a large popcorn.

Fantasy Land News reported that Fandango is also selling a Whalebucket Bundle for $49.99, pairing 1 movie ticket with the whale-shaped container. According to that report, the bucket ships to your home, and other theater chains haven’t posted their concession details yet. Availability may change as more chains announce their plans.
The early screening is designed to make the night an event. Regal describes 4DX as a mix of motion, vibrating seats, water, wind, lighting, and scents synchronized with the film. Getting tossed around and sprayed with water during a movie about being swallowed by a whale is exactly the sort of gimmick the marketing seems to want.

The bucket fits neatly into a larger promotional strategy built on absurdity. ComicBook.com shared photos of a lobby display featuring an enormous open whale mouth, giving moviegoers a photo opportunity before they reach their seats. Fantasy Land News also noted that the whale took over 20th Century Studios’ X account on September 9 and September 23, posting in character to insist it did nothing wrong.
That campaign has helped turn a grim survival premise into a running joke. The film itself, however, is a serious thriller. Directed by Brian Duffield from a script he co-wrote with Daniel Kraus, ‘Whalefall’ follows a scuba diver who is swallowed by a sperm whale and has 60 minutes to escape.

The whale isn’t alone in the collectible race. Comic Basics noted that it is the third big theater collectible reveal in the same week, following the Rocky Steps bucket for the ‘Rocky’ 50th anniversary and the Book Stack tin for ‘Sense and Sensibility’. The trend shows no sign of slowing down.
For a horror-adjacent release, the timing is smart. The film opens in theaters on October 16, right in the heart of spooky season, and a gimmicky collectible can help it stand out in a crowded month. Austin Abrams stars as the trapped diver, with Josh Brolin playing his father.

Whether the bucket ends up a must-have or a shelf-filling oddity, it has already done its job by getting people talking. The movie’s tickets are on sale now, and the whale is clearly hungry for attention.
