Robert De Niro has built a career on prestige dramas and crime sagas, but his latest venture into streaming territory is proving that star power still moves the needle in a crowded content landscape. Netflix’s psychological thrillers have had a mixed track record this year, and few entered the conversation with quite as much starry weight behind them as this one.

Since its late-August debut, “The Whisper Man” has been steadily climbing viewership charts across multiple tracking services, building momentum week over week rather than fading after an initial curiosity spike. That trend has now carried over into Nielsen’s official ratings snapshot, where the film has firmly established itself as the dominant title of the moment.

According to Nielsen’s latest streaming movie rankings, covering the viewing window of August 31 through September 6 and updated September 17, “The Whisper Man” topped the Top 10 Streaming Movies chart with 863 million minutes watched on Netflix. That figure placed it well ahead of Disney+’s “Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu,” which landed at No. 2 with 727 million minutes.

The rest of the chart showed a genuinely diverse mix of platforms and genres. Apple TV+’s “Mayday” came in third with 382 million minutes, followed by Prime Video’s “The Runner” at 368 million and Netflix’s “The Secret Woman” at 354 million. Rounding out the list were “9 to 5” on Hulu and Netflix, “The Angry Birds Movie 2” and “Scary Movie” on their respective platforms, Peacock’s “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie,” and Netflix’s docuseries-style entry “Turning Point: Generation 9/11.”

“The Whisper Man’s” dominance on Nielsen’s chart is consistent with the film’s broader trajectory since its August 28 release. According to Netflix’s own viewership figures, the movie posted a 70% jump between its opening weekend and its second week, climbing from an initial 23.2 million views to 33.4 million views, with total watch time reaching 63.5 million hours across 59 countries.

That kind of week-over-week growth is relatively rare for streaming films, which typically see viewership decline sharply after their debut weekend. The pattern suggests strong word-of-mouth has kept pulling in new viewers well past the film’s initial release window.

Despite its commercial success, “The Whisper Man” has drawn a notably divided critical response. The film currently sits around 48% with critics and 41% with audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, numbers that would typically signal a rocky reception rather than a chart-topping hit.

Directed by James Ashcroft and based on Alex North’s novel of the same name, the film follows widowed novelist Tom Kennedy and his young son as they become entangled in a child abduction case connected to a notorious serial killer, drawing the estranged father and son together as De Niro’s retired detective character is pulled back into the investigation. Adam Scott, Michelle Monaghan, and Michael Keaton round out the cast in a story critics have compared to genre touchstones like “Se7en” and “The Silence of the Lambs.”

With Nielsen’s numbers now confirming what streaming trackers like FlixPatrol had already been showing, “The Whisper Man” looks positioned to remain one of the defining Netflix releases of the late summer. Whether that momentum holds as newer titles roll out remains to be seen, but for now, De Niro’s crime thriller has clearly outpaced even Disney’s own “Star Wars” spinoff in the ratings race.

What do you think of The Whisper Man beating The Mandalorian and Grogu on Nielsen's streaming chart?
