There Are Only 5 Years Between These Two Actors From Love Actually — Fans Are Shocked
Love Actually remains a holiday favorite more than 20 years after its release, but one casting detail still surprises viewers every Christmas season.
The 2003 romantic comedy features many well-known actors and several different storylines. Over the years, fans have noticed something unexpected about two cast members who never even share a scene together. Keira Knightley and Thomas Brodie-Sangster are only five years apart in age.
On screen, the difference feels much bigger. Knightley plays Juliet, a young woman newly married and caught in a complicated situation involving her husband and his best friend. Brodie-Sangster appears as Sam, a schoolboy dealing with his first crush while being supported by his stepfather, played by Liam Neeson. One looks like a grown adult. The other is clearly a child.
In real life, the gap was small. Knightley was 17 years old during filming. Brodie-Sangster was around 12.
This fact has shocked fans for years. One Reddit user summed up the reaction simply by writing, “Hey what the f***? Another pointed out that Knightley was actually closer in age to Brodie-Sangster than she was to the actors playing her romantic counterparts.

Chiwetel Ejiofor, who played her husband, was 26 at the time. Andrew Lincoln, who portrayed the man secretly in love with her, was 30. That age difference has made some viewers rethink one of the film’s most famous scenes.
Knightley herself has spoken openly about how uncomfortable that moment felt. In a past interview, she recalled being directed to soften her reaction during filming. “The slightly stalkerish aspect of it — I do remember that,” she said. She added that she felt the behavior came across as creepy, even then. “I knew I was 17,” she explained, noting that it took years for the public to fully realize how young she was at the time.
Director Richard Curtis has also reflected on the situation. He has said the casting did not seem strange back then, but he has questioned whether he would make the same choices today.
