This Year’s Wildest Superhero Black Comedy Just Unleashed Its First Red-Band Trailer

The Toxic Avenger is finally making its way back to theaters, and it’s bringing a whole lot of chaos with it. Macon Blair’s wild new version of the cult classic has dropped its official Red Band trailer, giving fans a bloody and bizarre taste of what’s to come. The movie will officially hit theaters on August 29, 2025, thanks to Cineverse and Iconic Events Releasing.

This reboot of the original 1984 film takes things even further. It’s full of violent action, strange humor, and over-the-top gore. According to Bloody Disgusting, the film is proudly Unrated and uncut, packed with “toxic content, mutant nudity, splatter and p*s* play.” That alone gives a good idea of the kind of wild ride viewers can expect.

Peter Dinklage plays Winston Gooze, a sad janitor who turns into the monstrous hero known as Toxie after a freak accident. From there, he picks up a mop and goes on a mission to fight weird criminals, dangerous gangs, and evil business bosses. At the same time, he tries to fix his relationship with his son. The story keeps the spirit of the original but adds modern touches for today’s audiences.

The cast is packed with big names. Alongside Dinklage are Elijah Wood, Kevin Bacon, Taylour Paige, Jacob Tremblay, Julia Davis, and Luisa Guerreiro, who performs as Toxie in costume.

There’s also a voice role from Jane Levy. The film first premiered back in September 2023 at Fantastic Fest, and it also played at Beyond Fest and Sitges Film Festival. It got a lot of attention for how extreme and over-the-top it is, and it currently holds a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The movie’s journey to release wasn’t easy. After its early screenings, it struggled to find a distributor. Some called it “unreleasable” because of the graphic content. Adam Masnyk, a filmmaker and producer, said on X that studios felt it wasn’t “safe to market.” For a while, it looked like the film might never get released to the public.

But in January 2025, things changed. Cineverse stepped in and picked up the rights. Later, they teamed up with Iconic Events Releasing to get the movie into theaters. Now, after years of delays, it’s officially happening.

Macon Blair, who wrote and directed the film, wanted to stay true to the wild, silly, and gory style of the original. Lloyd Kaufman, who made the first Toxic Avenger movie with Michael Herz, said he trusts Blair with the project. “Macon Blair knows Troma better than I do… I’ve read the script and it’s better than the original,” Kaufman said.

Blair also made it clear the movie isn’t a direct remake. He told Empire that it’s more of a new take, combining classic Troma energy with updated effects and storytelling. He also confirmed that the film uses practical gore effects instead of relying too much on CGI.

With so many superhero movies out there, The Toxic Avenger stands out by being totally unfiltered and proudly weird. It’s not trying to be clean or polished, it leans into the strange, gross, and funny side of the genre. And that’s exactly what fans of the original love about it.

Personally, I think it’s great to see a movie that doesn’t play it safe. The Toxic Avenger is clearly not for everyone, but that’s the point. It’s loud, wild, and very different from the usual superhero stuff. What do you think? Are you excited for Toxie’s return? Drop your thoughts in the comments.
